185/65/14 too tall a tire?
So I can get a smoking deal on some 185/65/14 tires, but the stock size is 185/60/14.
Should I even be considering these? By smoking deal I mean ~$50 bucks for 4 almost new. |

I don't think I would. What are the tires? That size is probably a T rated M&S tire. I would look at something H rated which is probably going to be a 60 series. Kinda depends on what kind of driving experience you want.

The whole driving experience is my main concern and I've thought about it for a few hours. I really want the car to handle the way it should, and adding some sidewall never helped cornering...
Though it is a steal of a deal and I desperately need new tires on the mr2, I'll have to pass these up. How well do discount tire salespeople tend to respond to price negotiation? |

Right now I'm running Michelin X-Ice Xi2 175/65/14 tires on the stock rims for winter use. I have a set of 17'' Konig Tantrums with 205/35/17 Kumo's for summer use.
The handling difference is night and day between the two. The winter tires give the 'floating' feeling due to all of the extra tread on them, and a bit of body roll. I really can't say how all season, or performance tires of the same size would hold up - most likely better. |

Not trying to hijack this or anything but Timon, how did you fit 17's on? Every set I tried hit my suspension or I would have to roll the lip.

If you are looking for some cheap yet mildly sporty tires try the Capitol/Ohtsu Negotiators. My department puts a lot of these on our Crown Vic Interceptors. I've got about 3k miles on mine so far with no complaints.

suprarx7nut, My friend (named above attempting 18s on his Tercel) works at Discount Tire. I go out there, and so does a lot of my family. They're usually reasonable when it comes to negotiating the price. My dad bought new rims and tires for one of my siblings vehicles and got out at only $650 - originally it was suppose to be $702.96. |

I ran some 185/65R14 tires for a while. I got them for free from someone that upgraded their rims and tires, and my tires were bald. No fitment problems at all.
mr3: I've just had 17" rims installed. Motegi Tracklites 4x100 17"x7" in front and 17x8" in the rear, +40mm offset. 215/40R17 tires and a 5mm spacer in front and 245/35R17 tires in the rear. Everything just barely fits with the Ground Control Coilover kit, which is smaller diameter than stock. I have not yet driven on this setup yet, but everything appears to clear. I'm really looking forward to getting my car back and trying them out. |

Bridgestone Fuzion HRi 185/60/14
They are an H rated All-season and provide excellent grip in all forms of weather, they do awesome on ice and snow. We got our two sets for $47 per tire, thats brand new. I love them, the only thing I like better are my 195/50/15 Fuzion ZRi W rated ($65 a piece) they arent top shelf but its hard to tell the difference! |

+1 ^
That's what I was looking at getting. My local tire shop didn't carry them though. Really good deal on them through Tirerack. |

The stock tire on an 88-89 is 185-60-14 right? Do you think 195-60-14 will fit on a stock rim fine? I have a set of 88 SC wheels on their way and I was just wondering.
