Have you checked to see if you've got enough fluid in your brake fluid reservoir? If your pads are wearing thin that can allow the fluid level to drop enough to turn on the brake light.

I have the same issue. It's not a fluid issue, and I don't believe MKIs have that wired to the brake light. I thought it was the same thing, but my reservoir is full to the top.

It started slowly for me, sometimes it'd stay on, and then turn off later. It's actually the e-brake switch (it's located directly in front of the e-brake when it's down). If you slightly pull the e-brake up, and feel in front of the level you'll feel the little button that it pushes. Constantly pushing this in on mine by hand was able to remove the problem a few times, but the switch eventually went out permanently. The fix is simply pull the console off, iirc the e-brake doesn't need to be removed, unplug the switch, plug the new one back in.

I have a 93 turbo with the same problem. It started slow but now the dash light is constantly on and it wont let me set my cruise control with it lit. The way the sensor looks to be built is that when the switch is depressed it grounds out to the screw that mounts it. I pulled the console off, unplugged the sensor and grounded the wire but to no avail. Is there a way to test the switch or is it better (and cheap) to just get a new switch? I checked the fluid level and it is right up to the full mark...so its not that...but could that sensor have gone bad?

I thought that the e-brake on the AW11 was mechanical and didn't depend on brake fluid. I have had the sticking on ebrake problem and had to replace the two rear cables and have rebuilt all of the calipers at least once so I am moderately familiar with the braking system. I have also had the light on problem but it was about 10 years ago so I don't remember how I fixed it (it didn't involve messing with the switch though).

The ebrake is mechanical. The brake light is more than just for the ebrake though. It's if the brake fluid level is low as well as if the ebrake is engaged. The switch is under the center arm rest thing. Take it appart and unplug it. See what that does for you.
