fantastic responses and great ideas guys!

its damn near 40 degrees here, thats t-shirt weather! I'm attacking the issues tonight when I get home! I'll have just a little over an hour of daylight left, and I'm thinking I might be able to attempt the fuel filter change in that amount of time. I should do it anyways, even if its not needed...cause if there's one thing I've learned about older toyotas, is that it never hurts to replace parts... especially if they're only $16 anyways! I'll give your other options a shot first though!

by the way, Jackstand Queen, there is no way I'm junkin my 86 =) breadbox on wheels or not, it's my baby. lemme toss up a pic of her...I'm the guy with the beer... :-P

Thanks for all your great advice guys! I'll let you all know how it goes with my MR2 tonight.

so new findings...

I think it's fairly safe to say I'm getting not only spark, but certainly gas. I removed the intercooler and checked the throttle linkage... It's jammed like crazy and I'm not sure how its supposed to look. There's serious slack on the throttle cable, there doesn't seem to be a return spring, and upon finding this... my brother in law held the throttle open by hand (not the greatest idea...but its too gummed up to open on its own) and I turned the key...

now, I've heard backfires before...but holy crap! This thing popped like a damned stick of dynamite. There must be tons of gas just sitting, and yeah, theres spark... lol

So what I need to do is find a diagram for the throttle body complete for the 88 SC mr2. I downloaded that manual, and the pics aren't that great. I believe it would not only turn over, but run fine once the throttle body is gone through and cleaned up, and I figure out why theres so much slack and no tension on the gas pedal. thoughts??

your probably righ, the whole thing is probably as gummed up as can be.

It'd probably be an idea to take the whole intake off and clean it with brake cleaner or what have you.

Like you said, it'll probably start if you get it cleaned

I'll get a pic of my throttle linkages, i think they're similar, not exactly the same but similar

cleaning it and reinstalling it, I can do... what I'm concerned about is what possible damage has been done to the throttle cable to create such slack and play in it. we had to free the throttle up with a pry or two from a screwdriver.. when I say gummed, I'm talking sticky sticky nasty glued shut. heh what the hell did I buy?!?! this is kinda hilarious

oh man, what did you buy is right!

rofl

the gumming is probably because you got a s***load of carbon build up in there (which is normal) and then the gas started pooling up in there (being the cold start injector is right there) making a sticky carboney volatile mix

You could have some issues with the valves being F*** right up, once you get er running it's probably be a good idea to get a compression test and see where you're at.

my original idea was to hear the 4agze run while it was in the car, then pull it and totally rebuild it anyways. ground up rebuild has always been the idea... and I'm starting to rethink my plan of needing to hear it run while its in the mr2, and I'm now thinking it would just be a good idea to pull it and begin the planned rebuild before I cause any serious damage to it while "just trying to hear it run" ya know? the rebuild and the machine shop is gonna cost enough as it is, why add more to it with serious damage? what do you guys think? should I just quit with the playing around and pull it like I intended, and then begin the rebuild.....or is it worth it to continue playing around just to hear it run, when I know it already spins?

oh and something I found worried me, and I asked a friend about it... Unhooking the air intake hose from the supercharger, I found a nice pile of ashy white powder, which my buddy assured me was just "dried up coolant" and its normal for a 4ag motor thats been sitting... now really, I'd like to believe that, but I'm troubled by it, because it kinda looks like someone ashed a cigar in my intake, and I can't imagine thats normal....

I personally would clean the throttle body and try, and if that doesn't work forget about it, but i'm really not sure if you're wrecking the engine by trying

Are you doing any of the rebuild yourself? Or are you sending the whole engine in for them to take apart and stuff?

And take some pics of the goo for us

I most certainly will try! I can't find my battery charger for my camera, and its really starting to tweak me. I have 3 car projects right now (my ae86, the mr2 and a conquest tsi) and I have tons and tons of things to take pics of!!!

I'm doing the tear down on the engine myself. the block will be machined by a shop, the head gone through professionally, new arias pistons/rings, upgraded HKS cams (264 in/ex) and gears, I think I wanna save the rods, balanced crank, new EVERYTHING, JSP turbo exhaust mani, t28 turbo, megasquirt ecu, and probably an HKS hi flow exhaust if I can't get my hands on a greddy/trust DD.... Then I have a killer motor for my hachi roku...

Yeah I gotta get pics up, cause you guys would have a laugh and a half with what I'm dealing with... even if I'm not quite laughing yet! heh

sent tim a pm and haven't heard anything back from him. Anyone else know where I'd be able to find a clear and well lit shot of the throttle body with cable correctly attached on a sc aw11? I picked up all the items needed for a good and solid cleaning on it, and plan to remove it tonight.

I'm excited to hear this thing turn over.

did I mention its got GSR rims on it? ewwww blasphemy...

UPDATE

UPDATE: Well, it's been a busy weekend of car projects...

My brother-in-law and I pulled the motor out of his Conquest TSI and put his new motor on his stand. Ready to begin the gasket change, not a big deal. Also, taking his old motor down to the bare block to get hot tanked and start the rebuild on that one. Pics to follow (just cause its cool!)
Yay for my bro's Starquest! hehe

Also, upon battling with my MR2, I got the throttle body off, with the loss of a hose or two, and more than one bloody knuckle. Pics on that to follow also. I have to share with you guys just how gummed up the throttle body is. I hope the pics I took do it justice, because its so royally screwed up, you have to really crank on it to open or close the throttle. I found what looks to be 100 cigars worth of ashy build up (coolant dried and gooey), which has caked and clogged the entire unit. The cleaning on that starts hopefully tonight. Again, I'll update this with a couple pics from each event, cause I like sharing progress with you guys. You've been a great help for me so far, and the suggestion of inspecting the throttle body was a great one. It most certainly needs a complete cleaning. At this point, with the sacrifice of a couple hose tips from removing the throttle body, I don't plan on hearing the 4AGZE run in the MR2. Right now, the stripping starts, and the parts come off and get cleaned meticulously for use in the AE86 or for sale if they're not needed for the swap. If anyone's gonna need anything from my MR2 that I won't be saving either for the AW11 20v swap or the GZE in the 86, let me know!
