85' Mr2 Tranny Price?

Sooo. I'm getting my income taxes back, getting like 300, - after i pay 250 for some stupid BS **** that happened. I need a new tranny, My car recently in the past month has been a BITCH trying to shift.

Like today, i was driving in the park, went to a stop sign, WOULD NOT go into 1st, i could go into reverse but not 1st. So after trying to jam it into 1st, i just turned the car off and started in 1st..
Also, my car is Leaking Brake fluid from my master clutch cylinder. It's leaking through.. the Firewall i assume? The metal between the 2 sides that separate my front (trunk) and where my pedels are. So it's leaking onto my clutch and my awesome MR2 floormatt is covered in Brake fluid...Stinkyyyyy =(

Also, IDK if it's just a part of my clutch cylinder issue or a new a new clutch, but When i hold in my clutch, after about 1 sec or 2, it releases pressure and it's like i'm not holding it in at all.. Like at a stop sign, i can GENTLY reset my foot on the clutch and it will go all the way to the floor slowly..

Soo.. My question to everybody.. What do you think is wrong with my car? .. Wow.. hard question unless you look at it, i know =( but still... Any ideas?

Would it just be better to buy a new car? but with almost no money budget it would be really hard to buy a new car with a 180 dollar car loan and a 180 car insurance a month working at Wendy's, but it's w/e.
So how much would a new tranny cost for my car? Also to put it in? I need a working one for about as cheap as possible, and one that doesn't jump outta 5th. As i've read so much about. Thanks Everybody.

Replace the master cylinder ASAP! The brake fluid is corrosive- it will eat your paint which in turn cause the iron worms (rust) to feast. This is also causing the clutch to lose pressure. Clean up the lost brake fluid before it is too late, maintenance is far cheaper then replacement.
BTW even if the tranny is gone, U still have to replace the Clutch slave cylinder.

Interesting story:
My clutch COMPLETELY and suddenly died. I fondly remember the exact date years later, January 1, 2000 Yeah, I got Y2K'd
I replaced the Master cylinder, cost about $55 and was made in Italy! Took only a few minutes, but did not solve the problem, it was the slave cylinder.

2nd BTW, I just happen to have a tranny for sale. Check out the classifieds.

Maintenance is cheaper...

Also you're pooring money for that fluid down the drain (and onto your foot)

The weird thing your clutch pedal is doing is because you need to rebuild the master clutch cylinder. Inside the cylinder is a little piston (thing of the one in the engine) on one side is the brake fluid, and the other side you push to make the fluid move. What you have going on is that your getting blow by (as in like what can happen to your engine ) and the fluid is leaking out. The same thing was happening to my slave cylinder for one of my rear drum brakes on my old car, ya it ate through a bit of brake fluid

It should be known though, that i'm pretty sure the master cylinder is a little bit more complex than the basic idea i described, but it's basically how it works. Also, that might not be the only source of your leak.

ebouwman's disclaimer to anyone reading this: IF YOU ARE LEAKING BRAKE FLUID GET IT FIXED RIGHT AWAY AND DON'T DRIVE THE DAMNED CAR UNTIL YOU DO. What i did by not fixing it immediately was stupid

Oh ya, did you ever change the fluid in the tranny? And what did you use?

If you used the wrong fluid it could cause the tranny to act up

Uhhh.. I never changed the tranny fluid. Seemed to complex X_X so i took it to a shop to get an estimate and they never call me back. =( i was thinking that it may be the fluid just mesing up, But i don't think that it would just be 1-2 gear. 3'd 4th and 5th they shift, for the most part, smoothly. So idk. Think i should get my tranny fluid changed, 1st before i buy a new tranny for my car?

YES!!! For **** sakes, ChAnGe YoUr TrAnNy FlUiD!!!!!!

It doesn't always show in all the gears, it's really not that complex! Not at all, you in one of your threads somebody gave you all the steps, just follow them and everything should work fine, the big thing is that i think you have to leave it out of gear when you change it or something. If you've got a haynes manual use it for it's step by step instructions.

If you have to get a shop to do it, then do that, but they should basically give you a quote on the spot. F*** em and go to another shop if they don't return your call. Also you could try just going to a toyota dealer to get it done.

Also remember when you change the fluid it won't completely make it all better right away, it takes about a week until everything goes back to normal. And it can make a BIG difference! Get it done ASAP because you are doing some permanent damage to the tranny by not getting it done, it'll be fine for now, but get it done!

Also changing the fluid is 100 TIMES easier than changing a tranny!

At least it's the clutch fluid and not the brakes!

I had one of those i kept in the trunk of my old car. Checking the brake fluid and a general car inspection actually what i did EVERY time before starting the car.

But at least it had dual brake reservoirs! If it didn't then i wouldn't have driven it so long, because at least once i ran it down to the point i was only using the secondary reservoir!

Get that clutch master worked out. If you can pull one off of a car from the junkyard thats in good shape then that may be easier, but if not, you can rebuild the existing one if you can get a kit for it. I've never done it, but i'm sure it's do-able.

Some things you just have to bite the bullet on and do.

To save clutch fluid use the clutch as little as you possible can! So accelerate slower, and stuff, and don't race anyone! As kerry said, the stuff is corrosive and bad for the car, and you.

What did you mean when you said you have to pay for a car loan? And do you pay 180 a month on insurance for that thing? Do you have collision on it or something? Cause on a car like that it's not worth it to pay for collision. I only paid for 6 months on my car (in my infinite wisdom at the time) so i pay a bit of a penalty for the short insurance period, and i'm here in BC so i am required to deal with ICBC, and so my rates are a little higher than private insurance, and it's canadian dollars, so more CAD's per USDs and i pay 145 a month, for basic + comprehensive and extra 3rd party liability coverage

OUCH that sucks, i get a bit of a discount on my insurance from having no accidents, and it'll keep going up as my good driving record continues I also have not speeding tickets, so that helps the price. Don't ask me how i haven't got a ticket yet though, it's a mystery to me.

Only thing i've done, is a "sort of" cut a guy off (i had enough room, he was just bitching) and i started to slow down so i could pull off the road cause i was having car trouble, and i was a really new driver so i kinda paniced a bit.

Anyways, what it looked like from the slide marks on the snow was that he braked hard, then tried to turn in to the street where i stopped, (probably in a bout of road rage, so that he could school me or something) and didn't even come CLOSE to making the corner, and slid into a snow bank, and it wrecked the plastic piece that sits under the engine. And in my infinite stupidity and not wanting it on my record paid him the 75 bucks for a new one, should of told him to go suck it...

Master Cylinder

I just read some POTENTIAL awesome advice! Removing the clutch master cylinder from a junkyard car ( BTW- it many NOT have to be from another MR2). This is a great way for a newbie to get some hands on experience without damaging a functional car.

About the junkyard master cylinder.... The MR2 MK1's are now 20+ years old. Why buy a wearable item when a new replacement is about $60 or so? Now if the part was a simple bracket, that would be a world of difference.

Since we are only talking about the clutch cylinder, a junkyard part might be acceptable.

Now for all the Newbies:

The most important consideration is SAFETY!!!!!!

NEVER NEVER use a floor jack to support a vehicle, they are only for raising and lowering a vehicle, use some decent jackstands. Use some common sense, proper clothing, and if working by yourself, try to have someone check on you occasionally and keep a telephone within arm's reach.

I didn't know they were that cheap!? Good advice, a junkyard will probably charge you a ridiculously high price for it anyways.

Again good advice.

I am paranoid of being squished under cars, i always slide the wheel under the frame of the car when i take it off (although i'm pretty sure this would do nothing if it fell) and pretty well triple check all the jackstands and that the car is secure.
