Well, it's officially the compressor. Plus a lot of other stuff, but the compressor is the biggest ticket item. Stealership wants $350 for the compressor/clutch plus $400 labor to install. Looking at my Haynes manual it doesn't look like that difficult of a job, just cramped quarters (which we're all used to on these cars). My question: I see rebuilt compressors with clutch on eBay for just over $100. It seems like the best option money wise but I would hate to "get what I pay for". Anyone have experience with the cheap rebuilds on eBay?

no experience with the ebay compressors but changing the compressor is one of the easiest things to do on these cars so that's a plus.

Sweet. Thanks for the confirmation on the ease of the job. The dealership also says that all of the line fitting o-rings are leaking (I tend to agree). Most of those look easy to get to, minus the evaporator...

A/C rebuild

Just had the wife's A/C comp rebuilt here in South Florida for $200 w 1 yr warranty. (S/C)

Your not gonna believe how many O-rings are in this car.

Some AC shops have R-134 sniffers which emit sounds as you get closer to the leak(s) and might save you some time in prospecting sources of leaks.

LOL!!! listening to dealership workers !!!LOL !!!

Priceless...

I bought my rebuilt from ebay ID a9star9a like many others.. thats all they do I think and have a lot of good feeback.

last year it was working fine as I needed it, this year its blowing less cool and making a little noise. I suspect I have low pressure due to a small leak as well.

Will get it recharged eventually but not driving it now anyway and we have had unusually cooler temps this year, but overall for the price of the ebay compressor I have no regrets.

I'm no AC tech but...

I have been told by my A/C guru that the r-134 is the agent by which the oil in the ac system gets moved around.

If you are low in R-134 it would seem that correspondingly less lubrication will be supplied to the compressor?

Perhaps a $5 shot of R134 would help to extend the life of that compressor, which is worth saving right?

BTW if you do fire that Compressor up and it starts making any noises other than what you used to hear when it was 100% shut it down.

Wal-mart has it for around that, maybe a little pricier.

I think what I'm going to do is scrap the a/c for now. I am going to start saving up for a black top swap in the future and make sure the engine that I find to swap in has an a/c compressor already.
