Mk2 muffler my way
I got the muffler for $75 which wasn't bad.
![]() Got it painted with high temp black paint. Smelled like jolly ranchers. MMMM ![]() It was longer where the flange to mount to the cat was so that had to be measured up. Then cut and welded. ![]() I cant cut straight lines but both were even and it lined up perfectly. ![]() Welded and purtied up. Not bad for a cheap harbor freight welder. Under $100I believe. ![]() Close. ![]() Test fit. ![]() I didnt take any more pics after this. I made some mounting brackets out of what I had available. It hangs nice and even which I am happy about. I was expecting it to be off to one side by 4" because I get a little carried away and just start cutting. It lines up perfectly under the tow hooks on each side. I have to swap out my exhaust manifold gasket so I can hear what it really sounds like. Compared to what the stock one was, it feels more even throughout the powerband. It doesnt jerk hard around 3500 any more. From what I can tell I have a little bit more low end torque. I'll be replacing the manifold gasket tuesday after school and then I'll report back on the noise level. |

They make a pill for that...
Enzyte Nice job on the muffler mod by the way. I'm looking at doing the same thing once I can find a local junkyard with the muffler that isn't all rusted out. |

Thanks everyone. I'll be doing the gasket tomorrow so hopefully it wont sound like a jet engine behind me. Those pics were taken with my iphone and they came out pretty good. I have a few iphones for sale t-mobile or at&t if anyone wants one hit me up lol. Yeah, it's a fairly easy project. Just use your stock set up as a guide. I eyeballed it and it turned out good.

Yeah it's off a 93 that was smashed up. The SC came with a similar setup as the NA. I think the piping was a little bit larger not sure but that is a mk2 muffler on my car. If you have the same one, then chances are it's a mk2 muffler.
I did the gasket today. It's pretty nice sounding. At idle it's quiet but still has some noise which I like. Around town at around 35-40 it sounds good untill I let off the gas and then I get a loud droning sound. Not all that bad but it can be annoying sometimes. I went down the highway 65-70, slight humming but not bad. Quiet enough to have a conversation with a passenger. 75-85 (speed limit 55) with the windows down it was all air I was hearing and I had to crank the radio up to even hear that. Windows up I could hear the motor humming but mostly wind blowing in from around the windows. Gotta love these 20+ year old cars. I sure as hell do. |

The only concern I have about doing this is that, at least from the picture, the muffler body looks like it hangs down pretty low to the ground. Is that just the camera angle or does it really hang down that far?

Nice work...
Now that's what those look like...cool...can you take some pictures from under neath. I want to see how that fits under there if that's cool with you. I thought these dual tips were from mk3's but I guess not. Man I need to get me a cheap welder even if it's just for small stuff like that. Thanks.

There was no picture of it actually mounted. That was just a test fit with boxes underneath of it. I'll take some pics on more level ground. I'll try to get a shot tomorrow if it isnt pouring. I'll crawl underneath for you efx. It isn't pretty but it works good.

I can't believe the stuff I've been able to do with the cheapo $100 Harbor Freight wire feed welder. Because it is practically featureless it is easy to operate and repair. (I've had to replace the feed roller once on mine.)

I've been through a few rolls. I got bored and started welding everything. I put a 12 bar on a 110cc mini motorcycle. Reinforced the frame on that. Then I welded a new floor into my el camino. Plus I did a ton of side jobs for a few buddies. I think it was under $100 and it was a great buy by my dad. Also an auto dim mask for harbour freight was a good buy. We got one on black friday for dirt. It is the black one with blue flames (stupid looking but who cares).

Don't remind me about HF
I like just going there and hanging out checking out stuff. Although I can do a few things on the car, I'm not too crazy about working on them though. but I got no choice so I do. That's just me. I like that line, "I got bored and started welding everything".
