Gear shift boot.

Need a new leather shift boot. Where can i pick up a decent new one? Seen some on ebay, they any good? Trying to replace the last few pieces in my interior to get it in tip-top shape.

I bought a cheap ebay one for $15 for my 92. fitment was right on. I used a knob from my subaru on this car which has a seat for the boot.... unfortunately the boot doesnt have anything designed to grab onto it. Nothing a little DIY cant fix up..

The only problem I have is the leather is kinda stiff, so sometimes when shifting I can feel it pull like it wants to the trim piece off. Im hoping i can take it off and beat it with a golf club or something to soften it up.

I picked up one from Napa... looks kinda like a carbon fiber weave. I think I got the boot and the shift knob for 20 bucks. Which means I also didn't have to wait for it in the mail. I also re-did the arm rest while I had it all apart (added like 1/2 inch more padding too!!).

Before

After

True. The one from two's r us looks nice to. I kinda did the same thing on my 89 with the armrest. It had a big hole in it so i made a padded armrest to cover the hole.

The boot was a little long, so I rolled a bit under the retaining ring, and just folded it inside. The upholstery fabric I got elsewhere, don't think Napa sells that...

One thing I wish I took into consideration at the time....

The metal parts of the shift knob get HOT in the summer. I started putting a sock over the shifter while I parked it, so I couldn't shift when I get back in my car!

Man, I thought I was the only one trying to get this thing fixed today...

I went to Autozone today with dad and saw this boot so I thought I check it out and bought it. Unfortunately this thing is way too long and I don't like that opening at the top not to mention it's way too big and that string to tie it just doesn't look right either. The old one you see here is actually from a toyota tercel. I found that in good shape a long time ago as you can see. The MR2 has a very short handle and as you can see even that tercel boot was still too long for this car. Not to mention it has an elastic band at the bottom and the MR2 is square. So I just put the old one inside the new one to see how that might work, but it's still was too long. Oh and yeah my armrest is well, gone. I still have it, but maybe I'll just fill this whole thing with fiberglass since that thing just keeps falling off. I cut this small piece of wood and placed it under for now until I get to messing with it again. The piece of wood is a 20mm on one end and 25 on the other, but I think a 22mm and 26mm would be a better fit with just a tiny push it should screw in okay. Does anyone have pictures of how they have fix this arm rest part?

My Google Map

Anyone have ideas on one that will fit and look nice with a 94+ shifter? I purchased a new boot when I bought the car, but shortly after I installed the short shift. The new boot I got goes about an inch above the shift knob. I'm guessing I'll be stuck with just doing some DIY to make it work, but I figured I'd ask on here while we're on the topic.

Just pull the excess around the retaining ring on the underside, so that the boot is the right length. That's what I did and it worked great and hasn't slipped at all in like 8 months so far.

Can't do it

If I try to pull that any more it will start tearing apart. It's pretty tight and won't allow you to pull it any more, believe me, I tried, but thanks for the suggestion. I put this project on the side for now. It's a bit cold and I want to fix that whole console again. I cut a piece of wood to place under that area. On side should be 26mm and to other should be 22mm. I used 20 and 25, but found it just a tiny bit short. The larger number will raise it a bit, but once you push it down it will push up the bent parts in the middle and allow you to screw the console in as well. My numbers let me screw it without pushing it, but I think the larger numbers would work. I'll use fiber glass to add that to the console later.

This is completely off topic, but what kind of stereo installation kit do you have? I've tried 2 and both have failed at mounting at all. The one I have in there now is really flimsy and doesn't have any backing to the 2nd din.

well i got everything from crutchfield its a Alpine IDA-X200. I picked it up for 149.99 (which its still going for) and thats shipped and the mounting kit, wiring harness and installation instructions (which give details how to remove all the speakers for your car) Free. i love the radio.. no more cds. doesnt even have a slot for it.. right now i use the ipod or a flash drive since thats what its made for.. eventually ill get a small portable usb powered hd to run all my music.

sorry to take it alittle off topic.

oh for anyone deciding to do their own.. the hardest part my mom and i ran across was the top.. orginally it was to big of an opening and we didnt want to have to redo what we already sewed up so she got smart and put a small elastic band at the top. also if ur gonna us a machine its easier to do the top just before u do the last sem to close up all the sides.

the material i used was vinyl since i really couldnt find any leather. but it works just as great. not sure what everyone else was using when they made theirs
