Quiet exhaust
I've heard these cars are a little on the loud side at stock.
I would be rather interested in an upgraded muffler / dual muffler configuration to quiet it up a bit. Can't seem to find much at all as far as exhaust with a search (I expected I'd find a whole section dedicated to it, but didn't) so I'm wondering- anyone else interested in a quiet ride? |

I'm the same way. I'm gonna go with a custom Borla setup. Borla usually makes the quietest exhausts. But inline 4's are notorious for being kind of loud and obnoxious anyways

First thing is to make sure it isn't leaking. The manifold often cracks on the number 4 side. If that isn't cracked, move down the line and check to see if all the gaskets are good. I had stock muffler on for a few days with everything sealed up and it was so quiet. It was so much nicer than the loud buzzing. Stock I don't think it's too loud mk2 muffler is louder than stock most anything is going to be louder than stock.

just turn the system up on blast.. helps quiet the engine dramatically.

I guess we'll see how loud it is when I actually get it next month
![]() I'd still like to quiet it up a bit, though. People don't need to know its running. |

make sure you dont have any holes in your exhaust. because if you do. it like basically taking off the catalytic converter. Like when i had my old v8 without out it.. it sounded like a monster truck on steroids.

the most quiet and subtle sound ive heard is 5zigen dual exhaust. arjay from the stl mr2 meet have that exhaust and its so quiet you dont even hear it even when he goes fast. but the downside is im sure that cost a lot of money. but it looks good though

I put a performance brand muffler on my 4agze made by a name brand USA performance muffler. It was SO LOUD, the car could be heard revving up in the next county.
So I had my muffler guy install a Turbo II muffler, which I thought was loud at first, but then I got used to it. Not too bad. Cost like less than $50. The Turbo II type muffler cost me a LOT of HP. Feels like I lost 10 to 20 HP. |

power isnt a concern. As far as looks go, I'd just as soon keep it looking stock. Could I fit two mufflers in under there with some creative work?

You dont need to. It's quiet when everything is tight and not leaking. People who say it's loud either have a cracked manifold, leaky gaskets, or aftermarket setups. Stock with no leaks sound good. You will hear the engine humming a bit at highway speeds but it isnt all that bad. I drive 4 banger s10s at work and I will say a nice tight stock mr2 exhaust sounds as quiet if not quieter. Get the car first and make sure everything is sealed up. Dont believe everything you read online. Much of the crap you read out there is someone who think they know what they are talking about after owning the car for about 3 hours. I drove the car for about 8 months with a cracked manifold and finally got that fixed up and was amazed how quiet the car was on the highway. I could barely hear the engine behind me with the windows up. More air was coming in through the seals causing more noise than the exhaust. Then I put the mk2 muffler on and it changed the tone quite a bit. My opinion is to check the car out first and drive it a bit then make a decision on what to do.

I put on a new OEM muffler from Napa and it is pretty quiet. I can carry on a conversation with a passanger at 70mph on the freeway with no problems. Not to mention when I bought the muffler at my local Napa, it was only 60 bucks brand new!

Leave it stock
Well, i had a small shop put one of those after market mufflers on and it was loud as hell. It was so loud it just hurt after about half an hour if I drove any longer than that it was just painful on the ears. Needless to say keep it stock, it's quiet and you won't lose power either. The after market system actually made the car feel slower unless I was going down the freeway pretty fast. So in the end I put back a whole stock exhaust system and couldn't be happier.
I saw some pictures with a dual tip exhaust and some say it's from an MKIII, but I don't know. If anyone has any pictures and part number of those please post them up. That's the only thing I would like to find next time I need one. It looks pretty sweet and it's pretty much the same size. Other than that, just like others have said, make sure no air is leaking out of the system and you'll be a happy camper. These cars do require a bit more tlc than most sedans. You keep an eye on things and you should be fine. It's just a sports car, need I say more. ![]() Last edited by efx; 05-05-2009 at 05:34 AM.. |

I thought mk3's had single exit exhaust? I did the mk2 setup. Sounds pretty good especially when it echos through a tunnel or even with barriers on each side of the car. Not too loud at all. I personally think it sounds pretty darn good and it was only $75
Mk2 muffler my way |
