HELP
Anybody know if the timing belt idler pulley bolt on an 89 S/C is reverse threaded?????? I see they should be torqued to 27 ft pounds but mine won't budge.

I don't know if there would be a difference between an S/C and an N/A, but when I was doing mine I could have swore that I was going to break something when I was taking the bolt off. IIRC it is either a 10 or a 13mm in a very narrow place that you can't really get a socket in. This is the same bolt that has the needle for the timing point, right?

No it is definitely not reverse threaded.
Sometimes you spray a bolt or nut with Breakfree brand rust loosener. Wait hours or even a day or two for it to soak in. The bolt head is a 14 mm if you have an oem bolt to work with. In the intervening years, perhaps some hillbilly mechanic put in a standard (S.A.E.) type bolt and really srewed up. No pun intended. I recall buying a offset, or gooseneck closed end wrench to remove the idle pulley bolt. Its awkward to be sure. |

Thanks for all your help. The PB penetrating oil did the trick it just took a lot longer than I
had hoped. And yes Maticuno I thought it was going to break before it loosened. BTW Jackstand I think your referring to the A/C idler pulley. I had troubles with that also but I picked up a dogbone wrench @ Harbor Freight and it worked great. Thanks again to all of you for your help. |
