It's definitely not an OEM peice, you can tell just by the build of it. It's nice work if that's what you're looking for, but not OEM.

I just never really noticed before that it was so rare till i started looking at pics of other MK1's interiors. Maybe it was a dealer install but i wonder why and does that mean that other cars sold by that dealer would have the same thing. ![]() |

Do you still have all the paperwork? Sometimes it'll be in the purchase papers or something like that, in an options list or W.H.Y.

I never saw those grommets when I pulled the padding off the arm rest of my '85 to cover it. I'd say they were installed for the custom arm rest.

What happens is a consumer wants something that either isnt on the lot, or something that isnt a factory option. Most dealers work with local upholstery/customization shops (or have one in house) and can get about anything done. If someone says, "I want leather" or "I want a sunroof!" The dealer checks their lot and if they dont have anything on the lot, they send the car out to have aftermarket options installed. Alot of times its cheaper than special ordering a car with that option, and they dont have to wait for it to be shipped. I could do a leather interior in a matter of four hours. And about two sunroofs on a good day. So the customer gets their car quick. This qoute though reminded me of a funny story. Before I worked at the shop I was at, someone cut a sunroof hole WAY too big on a BRAND NEW Dodge Neon. We literally didnt have even an SUV sunroof that would fit. Our shop had to pay the dealer for the car... In order to get rid of the damaged car thay had bought, they got a simulated convertable top for it. Which is a fiberglass shell wrapped in leather normally applied to Caddillacs and Buicks. Then they threw some big spoked wheels on it and a ground effects kit (Oh yeah and a HUGE wing and duel fart cans lol) and sold it for a profit. So there is a good chance that was either done because of a screwup, or a customer who badly wanted a storage compartment under their arm.... Despite the one on the rear firewall... I would say judging by the pictures its most likely that its the latter, someone asked for it. Either way it wasnt offered by Toyota persay, but it was probably done by the dealer. EDIT :: And that pad does come apart, I know because thats how I re-upholstered my armrest pad that was there. |
