MK1 Autopal headlights and Two's R Us Break lines?
I was wondering if anyone has used these on their MK1? The oem headlights suck like no other and since I'm thinking about replacing my brake lines eventually I thought I as about them. I'm sure I can get some new oem brake lines for less, but I thought I ask about two's R Us before. I know they're a bit expensive so I like to find out if these items work as advertised and well, pictures are always nice. Everything works on my car now. Thanks.

Those look almost identical to the light I have, but I decided to go with Sylvania SuperStar Ultras over the blue bulbs. I had a set of blue bulbs previously and one went out within just a few months of use.
I've noticed the light pattern from both headlights adds an odd line towards the passenger's side. This same light pattern has been on two sets of bulbs, and 2 different head lamps. It doesn't bother me at all considering the improvement over sealed beam lights, but it is something to keep in mind. |

Hey Tim
I read on another jeep forum I think were they talked about the autopal lights that that line is to help you read the signs on the side of the road. So try that next time to see if that's true. Something to do with a requirement in Germany either to read the signs or see the pedestrians, but I think it's the signs on the road. Can you take a picture of that for us. I have only read about that but haven't seen them. I would like to see what that looks like and how they also look on your car. Fix okay, etc?

I have some of the old blue H4 conversions I had in the car, but they don't pass my state's inspection so I got clear ones. The fitment is 100% perfect. Mounting was cake walk, and it plugs right into the current wiring. They usually come with daytime running lights, but I haven't bother hooking them up - maybe in the future? The lights are down during the day so I don't see the point in them right now.
I'll see about grabbing some pics tonight since I just got new batteries for my camera. |

Awesome...
Thanks. I don't care for the blue either, I'm more interested in just getting something brighter since you know the oem are just not bright enough. I don't mind the white and I just want something that fits right in without having to hack things in there. Plus I have tried so hard to get them adjusted and well, that's practically impossible. I don't care about daylight running lights myself and ours being in the down position, it makes no sense either. I was looking at all the mr2 pictures on one of the other postings and I also liked the rectangular fog lights. I think one car had the blue ones, clear for me, I just thought those were the only ones that actually went nice with the car. I thought about small round ones but saw them on another car and well, I wasn't too crazy about them. This one is just optional though.
I forgot to mention that one of the guys from the jeep forum used black tape on one of the sides inside the housing to get rid of that line that you are talking about. I just hope it's not that annoying. I also found this other one. Let me know if your lense/crystal looks like the autopal or this one. I don't know if this one has the same line you mentioned since they do look different. I'm just looking around to see what's out there. I don't know how much help this will be, but...
I'd be very wary about shopping strictly by price for H4 housings. Keep in mind that this is something that has to be very precisely made, to have a decent beam pattern. This is even more true for the "Diamond Cut" style lamps where the lens doesn't have any of the flutes to fine tune the light pattern. (In other words, the reflector has to be perfect.) In any case, I don't have any personal experience with the AutoPal lamps, but I have been running a set of Hella H4 lamps in my Probe for the past 12 years or so. They're great. The nice thing about them is that they are all glass (instead of glass and plastic like the AutoPal lamps appear to be) so that you don't have issues with the housings melting if you run higher wattage bulbs. You can actually order the Hellas through AutoZone for about as much (little) as you can anywhere else when you consider that they don't charge for shipping. Here's the info in case anyone is interested: 003427811 --- 190 x 132mm H4 High/Low Beam Rectangular Headlamp Kit..... $73.99 Yes, pricey, I know but worth it, in my opinion. I plan on getting some for my MR2 after I've finished my 20V swap. A friend of mine has also run both Hella and Bosch lamps and he tells me that he liked the Bosch better, but they are becoming difficult to find these days. Also, you're spot-on about the blue bulbs. They are for looks, not for looking. Putting a blue filter on the bulb can only decrease the available light! |

Thanks for the info...
Well, I've been reading a little bit on the lighting and checking out what's out there. No auto parts have any housings so I'll have to keep checking online I guess. Here's a site I just found for some wire harnesses if anyone needs one of these. You can pretty much upgrade to whatever type of bulb you want as long as you have a housing. Pretty affordable too. Oh yeah, no HID for me, those bulbs cost an arm and a leg.
Headlight wiring upgrade accessories heavy duty wire harness Just thought I add this other link too...since I was trying to find some reading material for these lights. As I've said before i don't care about the blue, just wanted to read about them. https://www.msu.edu/user/nguyenn/Stealth/autopal.htm Last edited by efx; 05-04-2009 at 09:22 PM.. |

The "crystal clear", "diamond back" etc lights are interesting to look at, but not the best at actually lighting up the road for you. For that, Hellas are good. Cibies, in my opinion, are better.
![]() Get them here - this guy KNOWS his products and only sells quality stuff: Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply If you're going to run stock wattage bulbs, stock wiring is not bad on these cars. If you choose to wire in relays etc, I'd suggest getting the kit from Dan Stern as well. It will cost more money to buy, but it is GOOD, and I don't care for no-name stuff. There's usually a reason something's cheaper. Cibies are expensive, but I am not sorry I bought them! |

Thanks for the light info guys...
I think I will be passing on the headlights. I noticed the prices and shipping on them has gone up so I think I'm just going to leave the old stock ones and yeah, those other lights are nice too, but they do cost quite a bit.

Just some more information
Even though I haven't bought anything, I still had to read a bit more on the lighting. Just got hooked on it I guess. So for those who want to read a bit more too, here are two sites that also have a little more information. And these are companies that we all know so I thought I add them here for your reading pleasure on headlights/fog lights and well, lights. If someone has posted these before, my apologies. I like to read I guess but since I'm new and just learning a bit more about this information I thought I share it. Of course you don't have to buy from them nor do I work for any of these companies.
PIAA PIAA Corporation USA - Lamp Kits Hella USA and Canada I got the last link from one of the hella retailers link. Felipe up top is using one of the motorcycle versions. There are two versions of this. I've never seen a square version on a motorcycle, but that's what the site says I think summit states the one Felipe is using is for off-road use only. Hella 003427291 - Hella Vision Plus Conversion Headlights Hella One other interesting pdf on bulbs... http://candlepowerinc.com/pdfs/H4_9003.pdf I don't see Bosch lights anywhere though The Bosch Group - Car parts and accessories Bosch - Start Bosch.us Last edited by efx; 05-08-2009 at 04:27 PM.. |
