Coming and Going AW11's

Thats Right over the last few years I have put my hands on several mr2's only for a few days or weeks before they have been driven off by someone else. I have also purchased and sold three of them (2 mki's and 1 mkii)
Getting tired of seeing everyone else enjoy my work i am finely about to start back on my projects... All tho I still have a miata to put together an Ae86 20v swap to do along with a possible 3rd gen wiring job in a local mkii... and lets not forget to mention getting hitched on the 22nd of may so in reality I probably will not get too in depth with the first gen cars until the second week of june.

But Any way This will basically be my attempt in keeping up with what im doing with my current AW11's.

Back in September i traded my old beater car for a non running n/a 87 w/ a manual trans and $100.00 the interior of this car was filthy but overall in excellent condition.

Some how on my way to pick this up i spotted another black mki sitting in the wood line behind a house... I stopped and knocked on the door and inquired about the car, as we went back to look at it he told me that it was not running and that they could not figure out what was wrong so it was parked a few years earlier. I asked the gentleman if he had the title and what it would cost to remove this from his property; he replied yes and thought about it for a few min and said 500.00.... I preceded to tell him about the deal that I was going to pick up and continued to look over the car for a bit and eventually stood up and offered him 200.00 cash that day for the title in hand. He really did not hesitate to accept my offer, so we finished up and I left to get my orig. car ( coming back to pick this one up later )

here are some photos

this is the 87 5spd

as you can see there is some pretty good cosmetic body damage all the way around this poor car; but this will end up being the least of its issues

and as for the interior if you can look past all the junk the core of the car is in good shape

Here is our fun with the 87 auto later in the day....

as you can see it would have been a bit of a problem moving it as it sat.... so we had to leave to get wheels

once back at the shop it was time to "document" the car lol

so after that the cars sat for a few weeks well i worked on some other projects; eventually the 87 auto got a bath and through cleaning... damn it was disgusting!!!!

and i did also clean out the interior but its still in pretty bad shape so i never took many photos.....

since september/november we have moved out of "glenwood" the old shop to a much nicer and closer facility ( < 5min form work and home vs. >45min from anything civil )

The 87 5 spd car has gotten a starter, water pump, all new belts, fuel pump, full tune up, removal of some b/s alarm system form the 80s, a tail light and some minor body repair (nothing major i just couldn't stand it looking like trash)

I have fixed a ton of little electrical issues w/ the 5spd car and she is now running like a top and everything is almost 100% functional only thing left would really be to just mount the radio as its just chilling in the dash refix the power antenna and fix the drivers door window motor gear.

the auto car how ever has not gotten much attention... jodi and i have been discussing if she would like the car and what she would want to do with it along with the responsibilities that would come with restoring/modding a car.... ( this was mt attempt to spend more time with her "in my natural environment" lol ) needless to say she would like one but doesn't want to have to do so much work to it.

They're both a little gross with all that garbage, and those nasty spark plug cable ends, and the lack of a spark plug valley cover on the one.

You have a lot of work ahead of you Goodluck with the restorations.

At least your fiance/wife is willing to do some work on it and eventually drive it. Getting my wife to ride in my MR2 is like pulling teeth. Five years of driving hybrids has really spoiled her. Nice projects however. I love the boots and the baseball in the trunk. I found a collection of Christian music tapes in mine.

Nice!

Mine came with a bit of change, but the gas gauge was on empty...
Before i came up to pick my car up the guy said that he'd put a bit in from a jerry can, because the empty light was on, don't know how much he put it, but it still pointed to empty

I gotta say... I gave my wife an AW11 in hopes of her wanting to spend time on it in the garage (gave it to her when she was my GF years ago)..... as it turns out I just end up putting more attention on the nice/running aw11 (hers) than others sometimes....

that freakin car has been through 3 center consoles already.... I wouldn't have cared were it mine....

I notice that at least the one car had mice living in it. The big pile of fluffy stuff beside the shoes in the trunk is the way that mice make their nests. I know this because I left my 87 under a cover in my driveway for over a year and I had similar nests in the frunk as well as the rear trunk. I just pulled off the under body coverings to replace the parking brake lines and I found another nest under there. Good finds on the AW11s though.

well the auto car got a lift today so i could remove the fuel tank.... i dont think i have ever seen as rusty of a fuel pump and tank as this one...... Of course the tank was Topped off so i spend 30-40 min siphoning fuel out through the only hose that i had long enough last nigh (same size as the coolant level hoses)

anyone have any tips on how to clean out a fuel tank? I shoved a brush in there for the walls and its seems t be stuck in there pretty good so i don't know if i should even trouble with it

pics to come in a bit

Doesn't the 87 auto have a drain port at the bottom of the fuel tank? I'm pretty sure they added that nice feature in 87.

Nice finds. I'm pretty sure (100%) the 87 did have a drain plug in the gas tank.
