Knock Sensors
K so the knock sensor on my SC mkI has been broken for a while now and it throws a CEL after running for about a minute so my CEL is my unofficial running light now. The 4agze is a pig to get this for because they are almost always already gone or broken. I'm sick of looking I wouldn't mind spending $20 to fix it but most wreckers want about $80 for them.
So is there any other engine that has the same knock sensor, ignoring the plug pattern I can make up my own ie Something I can plug it in and it will send the right signels to the stock ecu. Maybe off a later 3sge or off a 20v? I have a 20v one laying around if that works. |

Suggestion: pull the part number and run it on some large auto part outfits like rockauto.com, napa, autozone, etc. And see if a cross reference comes up. Also there are websites that do part number cross-referencing.
If the part is Mr2/SC specific, I don't think your Dealer will stock, or order these anymore . . . . discontinued . . .. .sigh. Not meaning to be mean, but 328FTW is one of the smart ones, and doesn't need to be spoon fed. Maybe just kick him when he is down to encourage him to get up again. But seriously, I think cross referencing is your best bet. Unplugging the knock sensor, would be like unplugging the O2 sensor. . . . the motor would run in dumbed down "failsafe mode" . . . . I think. |

I was kind of hoping someone would be like "Yeah whenever I broke mine I used a ...." Would save me having to dig through part numbers and such, I'm always looking up other avenues for parts because I don't have the cash for what people charge for genuine 4agze parts. Like 4agze heads, I know they are near identical to the bigport blueport but people pay big $$$ to get a 4agze one, it's retarded.
And yeah my motor is in dumb mode so I had to bump the timing forward a bit to compinsate but I would rather make the CEL go away and get it running sweet again it runs nice that motor apart from small things like this. |

actually it will run fine with no o2... it will just run rich.
without a working knock sensor it will go into 'limp home' mode and you'll lose a lot of power. |

I found an interesting article on how to use a small buzzer or speaker used in electronics to bypass it. I use good gas and time it using a gun so the main goal is to just get rid of limp mode, its ghetto but still interesting, the sort of thing I do actually
![]() I finally did it!!! Knock sensor bypass!! Woot! Woot! - Honda-Tech I have a 20V sensor I would like to test for comparison, as long as the output voltage is in spec I will use that. I don't have a scope though, my uni does I might be able to just walk in and use one without anyone noticing. I haven't find a direct cross reference part # yet, I will keep hunting and see what comes up. |

Well the secret is starting to become apparent by now. Toyota is not stocking MR2 SC specific parts anymore. Of course they will continue to stock basic Mk I items like plugs, brake pads, oil filters, etc. in the future.
In reaction to Toyota's high parts costs, I have already installed two idler pulleys from BMW at 1/3 the cost of Yota OEM. And I've replaced the SC air by pass valve with a Bosch version that weighs a tiny fraction of the OEM, and can be mounted in ways to accomodate other mods easily. Mk I ECU's are holding up and still working despite being 20 years old. In another ten years time, I'm thinking most running Mk I's will be using something like megasquirt, or a mass produced generic equivalent. I'm looking forward to 328FTW's ultimate solution to the knock sensor. I read the Honda article and was not too impressed by the efficacy of the authors solution. His goal was to fool the emissions testing in Kalifornia. He could have unplugged the check engine light in the dash to accomplish the same goal. |

The O2 sensor is necessary for the car to run correctly like Toyota intended it too. It also a great idea to have one when you modify your car to be sure it running correctly still. I wish it was necessary as I just spent $185.95 for mine. I want my car to run properly and I want to be able to tune it properly.
If the car is all stock or mostly stock then yeah you can run it without the O2 sensor or the knock sensor. However you lose power without it and it hurts the gas mileage horribly. My dad had 2002 Toyota Truck and his went bad but ran fine. His gas mileage went from 24mpg to 19mpg. It also developed a knock at low RPM's so if it were me I would replace it (O2 sensor that is). As for the knock sensor, I really can not comment on it. I will tell you for my application that I would replace mine in a heart beat as I am going turbo with boost at +10 even for a daily use. |
