So the whole setup of my engine is about to kick the bucket, and i want to swap it out. I've been considering one of two routes: Either swap to the 3SGTE motor, or the SW20T.
Which of the two is more recommended or has higher torque? (not necessarily high speed, moreover just torque) I've also stumbled across the code 20v while looking through forums, what exactly is that? |

By SW20T do you mean a turbo engine from an sw20 mr2? Because that's a 3sgte anyway. The 3sgte is a beast of a motor and can see 250hp with ease and really cheap, gen 3 3sgte are the best and have even more potential. The 20V is a direct bolt in 4age with 20 valves (5 per cylinder, 3 intake, 2 exhaust) they make impressive power for an n/a 1600. 145 for the 20V silvertop and 155ish (I think) for the blacktop 20V.
The 20V bolts in and it is only wiring and piping, the 3sgte needs custom mounts and to get the correct cv shafts to make it work. Plus wiring, piping and a couple other fiddly things done. If you have the skill the 3sgte is a good swap otherwise 20V or 4agze. |

Im thinkin' the 3sgte is the way to go for me. It'll certainly be one hell of an experience
![]() Plus, it sounds more fun ![]() Know how much I should plan on spending? I saw a '94 3sgte motor online that was running for a little over $2k with all plugs and wiring, but is that normal? |

I don't know what you guys pay for a 3sgte over in the states. I did a 3sge swap because I was too poor to get a 3sgte but could afford a 3sge and a turbo setup for it, go figure. The materials to swap were not that much, I used the celica axles from my donor car and modified the shift linkage to work with the FWD box. I used 6mm plate for the mounts because I had heaps from old loader arms for tractors and it's high grade steel. It took time more than money, the piping and such I just found cars in yards with the right shaped pipes. Wiring was the worst, the mr2 turbo motor has a guide online with a easy green to blue wire type writeup but the celica motor I had to go from the wiring diagrams from toyota and my own knowledge, it took a lot of thought to figure it out. It did start first turn though
![]() You can get a loom made up for a few $ so you can plug and play but with even basic knowledge it isn't hard wire if you have an mr2 motor or some sort of guide. Read around, the more you learn the better off you will be if you swap. |
