Sounds broken...
With the manual locks if you lock the door and then close it, if you dont lift up the handle when you close the door it will unlock. Probably not a big point to you, but it blew my mind (never had any car that wasn't American before now)

lock the door and hold the handle up as you shut it , thats the way it's supposed to work. if you want to disable the power locks then just pull the fuse.

i was considering this option, will that fuse kill anything else? power locks aren't really needed for me

After looking at the fuse cover i noticed that 30A fuse for the door locks is also for the power windows.

What if ignition is faulty?

Hmm..if the ignition is not in the correct position, you can't activate the power locks.(even from the inside)

My old key pulls out in the on positon (and the others as well).

If I'm not paying attention when I exit the car and key the door lock it rejects the command because the ignition is not positioned correctly.

Could we deduce that if the ignition is faulty the same conditions would exist?

I think you have way too many parts so you should give me 30 minutes to get as much as i can for free. Kind of like a shopping spree.

The sad part is i have no where to put it.

no alarm, it might have been the ignition. on a side note my key is really really worn. when i plug it into the door it has to be at just the right elevation to work. i was told i can just take it to a key place and they'll copy it. the prev owner did leave some toyota keys that go to nothing in the glove box. doable?

perhaps you already know but... copying keys works to a extent, by copying a good key you uasualy dont have any problems but when you copy a worn key most locksmiths (theres a few good ones that compensate) just copy it so you end up with a new worn key lol >< your best bet would be to copy the key with the code located on the side of the lock on the passenger side. which in your case, would probably be your best bet. also if i were to shoot from the hip i would guess it is your ignition that is causeing your lock problem as stated by mr2tim ^.^

Had a door lock issue pop up this morning similar to this. I went out side and started up the car and let it warm up while I went back inside. Came back out and when I go t in and shut the door the locks started to lock and unlock themselves over and over. Did this all the way to work. I was worried that I had a short that was going to burn out one of the switches, but even with both passenger and driver side controls unplugged it still acts up.With the driver door open I lock both sides manually and press the button on the sill to make it think I closed the door and it unlocks both sides.

It acts like the key is in the ignition and it's trying to prevent me from locking the keys in, except for the whole locking and unlocking while I was driving.

Need to know where to start looking to get this straightened out before something worse happens.

1. Remove power locks, tape off any extra wires.
2. Install manual locks.
3. Lock the door, and hold the handle up as you close the door.

All future power lock problems avoided .

lol, you must be new to 80's toyotas....

usually the balls in the cylinders are so worn out that a handful of different Toyota keys will unluck (or possibly start) the car.

I have enough cars and have had enough cars that I have a small key collection... if I lock my keys in my car (at my house) then I can usually find something that will unlock the car in the garage.

I've even had 2 mk1's where the cylinders were so loose that when running I could pull the key out of the ignition. My old 4 Runner could be opened and started with any Toyota key that fit into the cylinder.

yeah that sounds like a broken lock on a 4runner to me, toyotaspeed90. my dads plow truck you can open with a blank key, or any other key that fits in the slot cuz i was locked out so i used my truck key haha. i broke the lock, not the key. we need to replace it.

i agree with mr2tim. a faulty ignition switch (not the lock mechanism, but the electronic kneuter valve in the steering column behind it) could have worn out and could be causing your problem.
