Just weighed my mki.
I just took my 2 to a scale!
2260lbs w/ 3/4 of a tank. That means it weighs about 2220lbs empty, perhaps slightly less. Stats: '85 MR2 w/20v blacktop swap, sunroof, power locks, power windows. Weight reduction mods: no AC, no trunk carpet, no frunk plastic, lightweight exhaust, lightweight flywheel, 15" Kosei K1 racing wheels. I'm fairly happy with 2220lbs, that's not too bad, though obviously less is more. |

Wow, I just looked at the papers from inspection and my car weighed in at 2650lbs. She's a heavy little critter. I guess its time to clean out the trunk with all my tools and other stuff.

After removing nearly 250 lbs, a truck scale says mine weighs 2450.
I'd be deleriously happy if it weighed 2220. Of course I have the heavy SC tranny axles, SC itself, PW, PDL, and T-tops. Dumping 200 lbs. like say a hefty passenger, makes the car soooo much faster. |

The heavy sound deadening mat on the interior side of the forward firewall.
The two 5 lb. slugs embedded in the body directly under the seats. The two tow hooks in the front of the car. The carbon canister in the engine bay. Dump the oem seats. I installed some made in USA seats by Hunsaker at 25 lbs each. A weight savings of over 30 lbs. |

^ I guess where we differ is how much a "lot" of weight is. 30lbs is quite a bit of weight. I'd estimate my exhaust weighs 10lbs- downpipe, muffler, and all. Maybe a bit less. I'm a bit obsessive about saving weight- I basically take the Colin Chapman philosophy to car design.
And on that note, I ordered some lightweight lugnuts to replace the enormous stock ones I've been using. It's not a huge weight savings, but it is unsprung rotating mass. |

I wish I had some room for fiberglass work- I'd make a fiberglass sunroof, hood, trunklid, wing, and engine lid for it. |

^ More like 10lbs, and unfortunately I think the mki looks absolutely horrible without the stock bodykit. That, and the sideskirts are covering the huge rust holes in the body.

If I had the money, etc. etc., I'd slap in a 6 speed tranny and use an aluminum flywheel.
The reduced rotational mass of the above mentioned setup vs. my E51 SC tranny, would make my car handle as good as an N.A., and make it drive like I'd removed well over 200 lbs. Though actually weight reduction would be closer to 100 lbs. 6 speed conversions aren't easy or cheap to do though. |

I have the aluminum flywheel, but I don't really see the point in a 6-speed. It strikes me as the "more is better" philosophy, that just ends up equaling more gear changes and no real gain in performance. The only point in having more gears is to keep the engine in the powerband- and if your engine has a good powerband, you can get away with 4 gears doing that, there's no reason to go for 5 or 6.
