I am about to tackle what I think is going to be a tricky mantenance job. The "Dreaded" Radiator flush......humm what are these little hoses for again?
Any hinters to make this a neat job? I own a 1987 MR2, Black, I call it "Chadster" |

Start here: MR2 Wiki FAQ - MKI:Engine Coolant/Anti-freeze browse
The Haynes Manual also has a procedure that includes bleeding the coolant out of engine block. To me that bleed cock is impossible to access in a car with A/C. Other people simply elevate the rear so everything flows out the front. |

I don't see why this job is such a big deal.. Heck the hardest part is taking off a few underbody panels. The rest is draing from the drain points, running a water hose to the radiator fill cap, and run that water through the entire system, until it all comes out..
you will have to tilt the car on stands a bit to get all the old coolant out, and water when you flush it.. Then, fill it with 50/50 mix of Toyota Red/Distilled water. Bleeding the system is easy as well. And, get a new thermostat, and gasket while you are at it.. I've done it 2 times on my MK1, and once on my MK2.. it's not too bad. |

Here's the 3 common points the Big Green Book refers to to bleed air from the system.
I would personally suggest if you have a air bleeder on the top of the radiator on the drivers side rear that you open it up and flush water thru it also. These cars have a tendency to accumulate black gunk on the top of the rad on the side opposite of the inlet at the top. At least both my S/C cars tend to do this? Tim |
