MOTOR SEARCH.....

I have a 1986 MK1 that could use a motor.... my only question is... where can i find one? i don't know if i can pull any old four banger out of a corolla or not but any help would be great... So, what engines will fit in this thing without major reconstruction/custom work? Also, my brother (Chrisfromnh) has a 91 N/A and he found a list of vehicles that had V6 that would fit in his. Does anyone have this/a list for him or even mine?

What exactly is wrong with your engine?

As for what engine to put in your car, how much money do you want to throw at it, how much mechanical know-how do you have, and what do you want out of the car? You can rebuild your current engine, do a direct replacement 4age, a supercharged 4agze, a later model 20v 4age (requires some custom work), or something more radical. Ebay has lots of engines, and occasionally you can find one at a local junkyard. I am personally a fan of the 20v swap- the extra 50hp really brings the car to life.

Concerning the '91, the only engines designed for the car are the 5sfe and 3sgte in the US. The V6 swap is becoming more popular- it's not a direct fit, so it requires some fabrication and know-how, but it's one of the easier engine swaps, as far as engine swaps go. Search the boards here and you'll find quite a bit of information on both topics.

Hi Sean,

I've got a nice 4a-ge (115HP) boxed down here in South Florida but that's way too far from you.

As you may or not know Japan has been flooding this country with their used engines heavily for the last 10-15 years. The Jap government REQUIRES that any engine over say 40k be recycled and from what I hear Jap authorities will not allow the owner to re-license his car till that old engine is replaced.

So the Japs dump these engines on the USA market big time, since most Jap engines are NOT required to have EPA garbage, emissions lines, EGR's, Catalytic converts etc etc these engines have increased horsepower as a result.

When you are contempleting your replacement engine be sure to include these "J-spec's" in your engine source/search. In most cases these engines will have less mileage than most engines found in Amerika's junkyards.

Look into Wikipedia for the "4a-" series engines and read up before hearing all this "unsubstantiated" info you will no doubt hear over the Internet.

You will find that alot of early engines have low HP ratings which may have been what happened to your car if the engine was replaced.

Tread carefully my friend, a informed buyer is less likely to be scammed.

From wikipedia:

"Applications:

* Toyota MR2 AW11: Mid-engine RWD
* Corolla AE86 GT-S: RWD (often referred to as generic AE86 chassis group)
* Corolla AE82 FX-16: FWD
* Corolla AE92 GT-S: FWD
* SE Sedan (North America): (RWD from 1983-87 and FWD from 1988-91)
* Chevrolet Nova (based on Corolla AE82 chassis; only some 1988 model year Novas had the 4A-GE engine, rare)
* Geo Prizm GSi (based on Toyota AE92 chassis; 1990–1992)"

Years ago I bought a spare 4AGZE engine for my S/C MR2 for $525 ($450 plus $75 shipping) through one of the west coast outfits bringing the jspec engines into the states to give you a reference for price. The engine included the long block, exhaust and intake manifolds, coil packs, TB, clutch assembly, supercharger, etc… I believe there are some jspec engine imports located on the east coast.

You can also search Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market which is a search engine for salvage yards to locate an engine (or other parts). The site will cross reference cars that use the same part.

There's an entire section of this board dedicated to that topic.

I went to car-part.com and there was only very few results... the closest one was 1200 miles away... Im gonna try and find something... all i need is the block (with pistons, crank etc...) everything else is good on mine- just has a really worn out cylinder...

When I searched car-part.com, I came up with many along the east coast including the following:

1989
Engine
Toyota MR2 -NEED TO START 5SP 143,000 A H4997 $550 Anchor Used Auto Parts, Inc. USA-NH(Plaistow) Request_Quote 1-800-382-5235 Request_Insurance_Quote
19

I searched for an engine for a 1986 MR2 for the entire US and then sorted by distance, using zip code 03111, Manchester, NH. The above listing is 19 miles away.

There is also the following listing:

1986
Engine
Toyota MR2 NO START SEEMS 2B OK.-78K 78,000 A 087351 $300 Magic Auto Salvage USA-NJ(Paterson) Request_Quote 877-3-4UrCar / 877-348-7227 Request_Insurance_Quote
197

There were seven listings within 67 miles, a total of ten listings within 200 miles, and a total of 13 listings within 250 miles.

Just to clarify...this is not a law...they do not require you do replace anything it is just mechanics charge an arm and a leg over there...

This is a myth..

Basically it boils down to this. They have emissions just like us except more stringent and cost more..Instead of renewing their registrations/emissions they just sell the car to a junker and buy a new one.. this is why you "assume" cars imported from japan have 40k KM on them..that may not always be the case..

CORE

implies the old motor san accesories(alternator, compressor etc)
that doesnt mean you can give them a box with the bare block in it they will keep your money.
At my work ive made a customers take it back 'assemble it' before id take it back. but thats rare. just ask what they want when they say 'core'
