Generally speaking there's no gain to be had from disassembling a CV joint. On the SC axles I've worked with, if the large ball bearings fall out. You can never get them back in in the right order(fitting order).
CV joints can be serviced (lubed). And you can replace the boots. I have a tool I could loan you to cinch the new straps down. If your CV joint does not telescope (move in and out), or if its very stiff, or stuck in one off center position .. . . .. you need a new CV joint. They are very tight fitting, precise parts collections. If bad, nothing you can do about it, except replace. |

It depends on what is in the car. If someone has stuffed corolla axles into it then they only come apart if you remove the boots (in order to rebuild them). If it's an actual MR2 axle then there are basically 2 "halves", which are bolted together with 6 bolts.

O.K., I can tell from your description, that you are working on an N.A. tranny and axle setup.
I'm still at a loss on why you want to take it apart. Cleaning? Its messed up in some way? If you do suceed in taking it apart with only three ball bearings the odds of finding the correct slots the three bearings dropped out of go up to something approaching "doable". I recently purchased a new half-axle-CV joint from Rockauto.com. It was for the driver's side of my SC tranny. It only set me back about $70 including shipping. So, if your N.A. axle messes up, it won't be too expensive to replace. |

Kevin, the drivers side E51 (SC) tranny is an easy fix: 1990 Camry V6 manual axle.
The passenger side is not available rebuilt, or new anywhere. You'll have to find an individual, or junkyard with a used one. Then, if its AFU, you have to send it out of state to a specialty axle rebuild shop like Raxles. In the meantime, proceed with your plans to use an N.A. tranny. Its lighter and lower geared than the SC version. If you take it to the drag strip, bring spare, spindly, little N.A. axles with you. They are still plentiful and readily available. I like the SC tranny because I can cruise at 65, and not have the SC engaged. I'd like the 6 speed even better, because the car would handle like it had a N.A. tranny, and still cruise at 65 with the SC off. You have remarkable patience and tenacity for someone your age. Most young people would have s-canned the project in frustration long ago. Even my patience gets tested with my bucket O' bolts. By the way . .. is the shifter on the forward side of the SC tranny from the Levin (as the tranny sits inside the Mr2 engine bay)? |

its sits like the 6 speed does and this tranny is not the same as a c51 these are some huge as axles. they are big mo fo's and it has an lsd that i have been told is amazing so i want to keep it all if i can also geared higher for better cruising!

A good LSD by itself sells for near a grand new. So you do have a gem there.
So, if this tranny's shifter lever is on the front side of the tranny when in the Mr2 engine bay . . . that's good to go. If they are on the rear side, you'll have to do a shifter swap. Its not too hard, but you'll be entering into foreign territory. Something you haven't done before. Do a search on shifter swaps, and check the stickies on that subject. I haven't done one, but could, if I studied up good before starting. So how do that phat axles fit lengthwise in your two? Even close to the right length? I have both my SC tranny axles out now. Lemme see the short one is 20" and the long is 30". That's measured from the outside end of the shaft up to the 6 bolt holes that mount onto the axle stub sticking out of the tranny. On SC axles . .. . . its a disaster for the 6 ball bearings to fall out of the inside end. So I always drift/pry (not pull) the axle stubs out of the tranny with the axles still attached to the stubs. |

Unbolt at the axle stubs. Consider putting in new oil seals where the axle stubs come out. Now is a good time for this maintenance.
I previously posted (in a different thread) what your SC tranny axle options were. Finding a used passenger side axle is the hard thing. Try: Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and the parts for sale forums. Club4ag.com has one too. |
