wait, what?

I drove my '85 halfway across the country 200lbs over its carry weight capacity... then the other half at just about carry weight capacity.

little car has plenty of go-juice.

Don't worry. He's just a troll, and it looks like he's gone now.

i used my dad's bike rack and it worked awesome, its one that hangs off the back with an upper and lower padded bar, and then 2 straps on top and 2 on the bottom! I've also used the engine hood to move my refrigerator to the dorms hahaha

ive used one of those too.. they're terrible. it WILL damage your (at a minimum!) paint. can take chunks out of your spoiler and bumper if it slips..

it works in a pinch, id strongly suggest not relying on one though.

I am using a trunk mount rack right now and it works fine with the spoiler. The Yakima roof rack is really nice but you can run the price up to $800 for the top of the line model! I like the OPs Idea a lot, too! My trunk rack holds 3 bikes, but don't really ever need to haul 3 around! hahahaha

Yes if you'e not careful that can happen, but since the straps are long enough, I use that to tie the bike down so it won't move while I drive. My rack also takes 3 bikes, but since I only have mine, that's not a problem, plus it would be pretty cramped to get 3 bikes on that thing. Also, just don't use the innermost brackets when you mount it so it's not all the way next to the car. Just tie it so it doesn't move and that should do the trick. Not perfect but it works. Don't leave your straps hanging like the picture though.

I should mention that mountain bikes will look weird like the picture, you will always have one side that looks way higher than the other. It works fine, but just looks weird. At first you think you don't have something right, but that's just how the frames are so they won't sit nice and even.

you dont have to take my word for it.. but you should probably consider the hundreds of years and millions of miles of combined cycling experience of two of the biggest cycling communities on the net trunk racks damage cars! you just cant hang a 20-30lbs bike on a 20 inch lever against paint without bad things happening sooner or later. i use my mazda for carrying the bike until i can come up with a hitch mount.

the straps blow back in the wind.. doesnt make a difference.

LOL

I'm not trying to contradict you. Things can happen nothing is perfect, but you can still do it. But I need to dust out my bike and get it up there again someday. Hell I'm even surprised myself that that thing hasn't fallen off, but testing and engineering do some pretty cool things too. My bike rack seems pretty solid, but there are many that are just flimsy and cheap. But after I take my time getting things set and drive like a normal person, I haven't had problems yet. That's just my experience though and I wrap the straps around the frame or tires and tie it, then they stay put. It takes longer, but I figure if something falls at least it'll still drag so I don't have to go back and get it, or worst get hit by another car and cause an accident. So I'm conscious of that. In any case, I'm not trying to advocate the trunk rack, just wanted to share my experience since I had to learn that one on my own. And yes, there are better racks out there. Like the new ones that just flip open on one side and you just lower the bar on the front or back tire and it locks. Saves time and you don't have to tie anything. Of course they didn't have anything like that when I bought mine, not to mention you do need I hitch which I don't have and that would be just too big for my MK1 which the original poster was referring to and it's what I have too. Like I said before, you got choices now and this will also depend on your budget.

Yup, two frames in the back and a strap going from the rear tie-down under the bumper up through the latch on the trunk and back down to the tie-down. Put the bike in upside-down with the front end sticking out to one side. Be sure to put a cloth between the top tube of the bike and the top of the rear quarter panel. Wheels stay on the bike, this works with my dh rig so you spandex warriors shouldn't have a problem

I've done a little more design work to streamline the rack, and I hope to have them made by the end of the summer. I can see it's not a terrible popular idea, and I didn't expect it would be. But nonetheless, work is progressing. I'll keep posting updates here, but PM me if you might be interested in getting one for yourself.

I'm very interested in it. Would love to see pictures also. Not everyone is a cyclist but they should be!

That rack would look bad a$$ on my sup'd up MK1 (when it's finished).

I went for a ride with my buddy yesterday. I carried my road bike in the passenger compartment, seat out the window, fork in the ashtray and the chainwheel against my right shoulder. The wheels were laid on the dash and against the frame. I was able to shift and drink my coffee while driving. It looked ridiculous. I should have taken a picture (next time).

I'm leaning more towards the "I want one" side of the spectrum. Keep posting updates and post pics if you got 'em

Finally got the road biclycle back together...

Here are the pictures of my rack as promised. I usually use it for the mountain bike but since I'm way out of shape I thought I start locally again on regular roads. I started puting this one together last summer but didn't ride it. It was one of my older brothers bike. Interestingly enough, you don't get the same drag you get with the mountain bike. I don't feel anything with this bike on it which is really nice. Stays put nicely too. So the more I use the rack the better I get at installing it and taking it off the car.

Oh yeah, I bought this one a while back and this is for 3 bikes. I think I've only had two on it, but three would be pushing it on the weight I think. It's usually just mine so it works well for me. And this was taken when I got there so my straps stay where I put them. I don't let them fly all over the place. The first ride is brutal when you haven't gone out for way too long. Other than me losing my breath a few times, the bike worked great without any problems after cleaning and lubing a few things on it.

^^^ Man... doesn't that front wheel flop around when driving - hacking up your bumper or spoiler? You need a top mount rack.
