help with un-shaved head measurement
I made the dire and stupid mistake of using a local machine shop again.
I need to know how many inches they shaved off the bottom of my head when they resurfaced it. Could someone who has an intact head laying around take a depth measurement of the depth of the coolant grooves around the combustion chambers, or perhaps the oil passage next to the headbolt hole that looks like a punctuation comma? The measurement needs to be precise into the thousandths of an inch range. Note to Self: Never take anything to The Jethro Bodine Machine Shop AGAIN. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thanks in Advance |

Bigport or smallport? I would guess from previous posts but I'm tired and would probably be wrong. I have a stock supercharged bigport head laying around somewhere.

Its a bigport 4agze head.
I think the shave was so deep, I'm gonna have to get adjustable cam gears to get it running right. No hurry, I'm waiting on that machine shop to ruin my block and some parts are still in the mail. Thanks, and I take back all the things I've said about Z-landers. Lol. Especially the one about crocodiles won't eat them because they taste bad. Heard any good cannibal jokes lately? |

You still want measurements Jackstand? I was staring at a Bigport supercharged head on the floor today and couldn't remember which part to measure although I did actually remember after a couple weeks lol.
I measured the overall height at the cam end of the head with some good calipers to the deck. Was a half ass attempt at measuring but I was kinda swearing at my gearbox at the time and was taking a break from swearing at the gearbox It was 116.1mm if that's any use. I'll try to remember again tomorrow if you still want the coolant passages depth![]() |

Yeah, that'd be nice. I should make up crazy stories about you more often. I have to find some: A Texan, a Z-lander and an Aussie walked into a bar jokes. lol.
The head shave I got seemed severe and I panicked. I started thinking: Adustable Cam gears to get the cam timing back, and a full time diet of octane booster, to handle the compression increase. But since I actually have no blithering idea of how much was taken off, . . . . I don't know what to do. I did your measurement in the photo and got 116.2 mm with a digital caliper. At that great extension, its probably not super accurate. I think a couple of greatest depth readings in the coolant grooves, and maybe in the oil feed "comma" area that contains a headbolt hole would be extremely helpful. Then I could do a Comp. ratio calculation and ask you, toyspeed90 and Papoj if I needed adjustable cam gears or not. Note to self: don't take machining work to shops named "My Grandpa was my Father". |
