my car putters

well my car putters and it sometimes has a problem on the rpms they will idel from 500 to 1500 it will just move up and down sometimes and it also dies when i turn it on once in a while wat could i do?

Sounds like a vacuum leak. I'd check all of the lines around the intake manifold. Usually you can hear the leak.

One way to identify where a vacuum leak is at is to start the motor and let it idle. You can take a (keyword here) "unlit" propane torch and turn it on just a bit until you have a little gas escaping. Run it around the vacuum lines and if your motor revs up you have found the leak. The propane gets sucked in the motor cusing the engine to rev up. It's an old school approach, but it works. You just want to make sure you keep the gas pressure low so you are less likely to accidentally have a spark or something light the torch. Another less flamable method is to use a stethscope and listen for them. Or you can use a vacuum pump with a gauge and look for a vacuum loss after you apply vacuum.

Never thought of using a gas torch, I was always told to use starter fluid/carburater cleaner and just spray it around.
Propane torch would be much cleaner

alright cool i will try doing the propane but does that make it putter when its ideling i was told that it has a weak fire on the spark plugs so???
