87' Transmission
Hey Everyone,
My tranny grinds going into 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gear when i push it hard. Sometimes it even has a hard time going into 4th or downshifting into 3rd when driving at normal city speeds. I'm considering a new Transmission or rebuilding the factory tranny that came with the car, what are your thoughts? Keep in mind i have a red top JDM N/A motor, exedy stage 2 racing clutch and new factory flywheel all installed July 2007. I also plan to use it as a daily driver and track it on weekends. Thank you. Adam p.s. I've been to Buttonwillow Raceway and words can't describe the joy I had. :-D |

I would say syncros but if it is all the gears then you might have the wrong fluid in the tranny or just really cheap nasty fluid or something I would swap it for some better fluid. People seem to be happy with redline MT90 you really need a GL4 75w-90 the GL5 fluids are too "slippery" I think.
Really high rev gear shifts will make the syncros scream for mercy though, my racecar begs for mercy when I'm near bouncing it off the limiter and shifting they just clunk through basically I force it through the gears the clutch is lucky to ever get so far as hit the floor ![]() |

Yeah, sounds like synchros. My transmission grinds into 3rd, and if I'm really gettin on it into 2nd as well. I had my previous tranny rebuilt with all the newer updated synchros, hubs and forks. shifted like a dream.. then soon after developed the 5th gear pop-out. I got a newer tranny tho, so I could mount the starter on the intake side and it needs rebuilt as well... new fluid, possibly with some Lucas additive, may help out a lot, but will most likely not substitute a rebuild.

You need a supercharger starter if you want to run the starter on the intake side. Excel part number 17002.
