different "tops" ???

I've been looking and looking and i can't find anything that tells how to distinguish the different head color tops.... my engine has silver valve colors with red letting saying 16 valve supercharged.... is that a silver top or a red top?

what do you go by the writing color? the intire valve cover color? which is the best? did some only come out in japan? etc etc....

If yours is supercharged then it would be a red top, however the best way to tell is the count the ribs in the block as the covers can be painted/etc....

IIRC the redtop is a 7 rib block and the blue top is only a 3 rib.

The bluetop was in 85-86. In 87, the redtop came out. Some of the engines had blue lettering but were still redtop engines. The only way to tell for real is the "ribs" on the engine. The silvertop and blacktop engines were only released in Japan but can be shipped to us in the states but require a few things.

it's actually much more complicated in real life than that.... there's a thread on mr2oc about the exact same thing....

but by now, ignore the valve cover colors as they are over 20 years old and possibly painted, swapped, etc....

Yeah that's a 4AGZE Supercharged, unfortunately not included in the image of different covers Traintech posted. Yours appears to have the paint removed from the valve covers, or maybe the JDM was a finished raw. On the Supercharged MR2 they letters are black and red (like a red-top) but include "Supercharger" as you can partially see in your images. Pretty sure 4AGZE shares the NA red-top's 7-rib block but I think that's the only compatibility. Not much interchangable from the 4AGZE and any other 4AGE.

More obvious distinctions are the supercharger on the intake side and intercooler on top of the engine. The intercooler is more square in the MR2. Yours appears to be the more rectangular one from a Corolla.

It appears that you are the proud owner of a complete supercharged engine. Be happy. Where are you sticking it?

You'll have to look around for fit issues putting a the front mount engine into the AW11, but I don't think you'll have any serious problems. It's a common, well documented swap. What are you replacing?

If it's in bad enough shape that you are swapping instead of fixing, it may be worth more to you as parts than to sell to some poor schmuck for a few hundred bucks. It will probably be very useful resolving those fit issues, and spare parts (supercharger !) are not a bad thing. I'd keep it.

i think he is right, you should fix the parts on the old engine to swap incase something breaks.

looks like a very late ae92 or ae101 4agze.... looks like an e58 and may have LSD.

coilpack, no afm, gray oil dipstick, top mount....

the engine itself will bolt right in no problem (if you use the MR2 mount)... if you want to use that trans then you will need to play with mount.... long ago I put up on mr2oc.com what I was able to put together to make work (using n/a parts and the brackets that came on the E series I had) in an 87 mr2.... I have since swapped the E51 out for a C52.

**edit**

all FWD 4agze valve covers came unpainted. Further, photos of the engine show the later s/c as well.
