it sounds to me like he just decked the head to flatten out warpage scratches or whatnot so itll seat well against the headgasket and not leak. no clue how much its good to shave down or how much was; but shaving the head down will raise the compression.

Had a head job huh?

Mr Guitar,

The 4a engine series is a non-interferance engine.

That means when the timing belts blows no valves go thru the pistons.

I don't believe shaving the head or decking the block will compromise this unless it was extreme.

I suspect the shims you are referring to are only necessary if one dis-assembles the cylinder head as the overhead cams setups are self-contained within the cyl head and any tiny decrease in deck to cylinder relationships might be absorbed with the timing belt tensioner?

Since you indicated you got your 12 point tool last week, your parts may be scattered on the floor as we speak? Was something broken?

In 20 years of owning Mark 1 engines I would advise the use of OEM head gaskets for longevity. If your into high pressure turbos and tissue thin head gaskets keep that 12 point nearby it's going to get plenty of use.

And if you want to measure something, going to a huge cam lift with a shaved head/deck may provide you with the opportunity.

Here's hoping all goes well in your automotive adventures!

Tim

well i mean that motor is trash i was just seeing if i should sell it or scrap it....i was looking at the piston and all the corners are chipped up which means it made contact with the head...it seems like a scrap project to me...althoug i'll sell all the valves that are still good

the thought of scrapping anything mr2 saddens me because its one less of that part floating around
although i dont think its going to be fit to sell...idk when i have time i'll post pics and see what you guys think

interference doesn't mean the piston would hit the head.... that means that it would hit the valve if the valve were to be stuck open for some reason.....

if the block and head were cut so much that the pistons are damaged from hitting the head, then the head and all valves are destroyed as well... and if it actually ran, I would guess the rods are bent as well.

well this thread got very specific. The engine spun the number 4 crank bearing spun the rod all the way around, snapped it and threw it through 2 big holes in the block. When I took the oil pan off...that piston was all the way up in the cylinder...it was shattered on hte sides from rod connection...and it was up against the head in the cylinder i just didnt notice the chips on the top until I was telling my friend about it and thats why i arose the question of selling the head because it might need to be shaved down farther or something like that
