IIRC this is the one that is no longer available but you can have your old one rebuilt. you could also use an N/A tranny instead.

SC
ToyoDIY.com

N/A
ToyoDIY.com

take a side by side look at them and see if they are... im not possitive, but i think the SC is different from the NA, because of the marginal weight... but again im not possitive.

**EDIT**

MUFFINMAN ::shakes fist violently:: you beat me to it...

Can an old one be constantly rebuild and refurbished? Or at some point will the whole unit have to be replaced?

Where are the rebuild kits available from?

It isn't a kit, it is a service... check your local listings for axel shops. Our local one is axels unlimited or something like that. I think they're about 130 each or something from the place I checked... just bearings that need replacing, pressing on, and then you repack the whole end unit with grease. You can repack one yourself, but that's not going to fix a problem with the axel if it is going to the bad. The N/A and S/C axels are not available through toyota nor or are they available aftermarket anymore through most suppliers. I know because I tried to buy the last passenger side one in a warehouse... but when it came in it was a driver's side so I didn't take it home.

the only thing that is the same is the outboar spline size and count.... hubs from 87-early 89 are the same for n/a and s/c.

other than that... the axles are in no way, shape, or form the same... inboard shafts on the s/c is longer, larger diameter, and have a different spline count. The joint is built completely different (s/c axles use no studs... uses more of what looks like a machine allen bolt), and the shaft size is completely different. IRIC the ball & cage is completely different as well.

when I worked at a parts shop, when I was bulding my 87 s/c... I couldn't find axles anywhere... toyota stated "we might be able to get them, but no guarantee.... and they are $500 each plus a core".... that was about 5 years ago or so.... I got mine used.

I do believe Jackstand Queen may have bought a new pass side (the long one)recently for his SC that interchanges with a Camry or something similair, you might write him for references. (He's cranky so be polite! please)

As for toyotaspeed90 here's a mystery for ya.

I pitched that very expensive to rebuild E-51 S/C tranny, installed a NA c-52.
The axles on the c-52 didn't fit the axle carriers from the SC and I had to use the carriers from the c-52. (the tow-in adjusters lengthened too BTW)
Any idea what was going on there?

(The cool part of this swap is that I now have easy to obtain rear brake rotors from the NA which are different from the hard to find SC size.)

rotors should be the same...... 87-89 all have the same stuff back there in terms of suspension and brakes (for the same build date.... late 89 is not the same as 87-early 89)

In terms of "carriers" you would have to be more specifc there....

like I said, both C series and E series axles are very different.... the only thing that's the same is the outboard spline size and shaft, since both the n/a and the s/c use the same hub. Other than that, the size (diameters, length), spline counts, build type, are completely different -- so you would need to use complete C series axles and complete E series axles.... nothing is interchangeable...

n/a vs. s/c...

notice the joint build is completely different.

I just happened to check last night on axles for an 88sc manual, and they can be ordered at Advanced Auto Parts for $69.99 IIRC. And yes I checked to make sure the parts numbers were different for the SC and NA, they're different.

-I just checked the actual shipping info, and its not available eventhough the price is listed and it says it is. So yeah it'll probably have to be rebuilt.

There are the automatic axles available I know that for a fact. I'm 90% sure that the 5 speed ones are not though. I work at a parts store and they looked and looked and couldnt find them for sale for the manual car.

Mike, try Raxles, America's premier supplier of OE quality CV Axles and CV joints | Raxles.com - I have not dealt with them personally, but they have a good reputation among MR2 people.

The driver's side SC axle can use the Camry axle. But not the passenger side.

Many online parts stores will mistakenly list having an SC passenger axle available. However, what they are offering is almost certainly a passenger axle for the N.A. transmission. I ought to know, because I ordered a couple of them.

te51levin summed up my take on the situation: search nationwide for a axle specialty shop with a good reputation and ship it off for a rebuild.

When the axel needs rebuilding, what exactly is being rebuilt? Is it just the bearings and seals?

they will probably change the bearings, possibly the cage, the boots, and check for any damage done to either splines.
