86' owner with a big problem

Hi I just got my first mr2 last friday for cheap and it is in good shape (other than the dreadded wheel well rust) and i figured it needed some engine work before it would run properly. First off it had an alternator problem that was noticeable. replaced it and was taking it home and it acted like it had hardly any power at all. while driving it home the day i got it the car started to overheat (alot) and it had melted the sparkplug wires to the plugs and the distributor melted. got them replaced and the car still seems to have the same problem. you guys think it might be the o2 sensor? only the manifold header and a few inches of the exhaust is there (the guy cut off the catalytic converter off) or maybe the intake system?

thats messed up but welcome and heat rises and goes into the engine bay and could be messing with your sensors. i would sugest putting enough exaust to get it out the back but lets see what others think

Yes, the ECT is. My 2 was originally an auto, but I swapped that s*** out as quickly as possible ! ECT = Electronic ControlTransmission. It controls the timing of the shift points and torque converter lock-up. Basically like "sport" mode on newer puss-o-matics..

If you have access to one, hook up a fuel pressure gauge. Harbor freight sells cheapo fuel pressure test kits. Should read somewhere between 35-45 psi (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Keep your eye on the oil pressure and listen for any rod knocks from the engine. Sometimes people retard the timing to hide the sound of a rod knocking.
