aw11 trailer hitch

looking for information.

I noted a kit for the mk3, but I'd imagine one doesnt exist for the aw11 (simply because I want one); but surely one has been fabricated. I'd imagine the rear bumper connects to the chassis at a very solid point (actually I just installed the rear bumper last night, so I'm certain of it)

Anyone have info?

Google is an amazing tool...

TrailerHitches.com

I find it funny that the towing capacity of my MR2 is more than that of my wife's Ford Escape Hybrid.

Well I'll be damned.
she cant carry more than 400lbs, but she can tow almost her own weight?

If that picture is accurate, though, I see no plausible way it could bolt to ANYTHING. Even if I removed the muffler entirely, that would only bolt to the floor of the trunk, which would bend at 100lbs, and entirely rip out at 300.

You might try contacting those guys and asking to see the installation instructions before you buy.

Was looking for some conact info, actually.

Severely curious as to the differences in 85 to 86, since I have an 85 and they list compatibility starting at 86.

well i can say...i've had 3 people in the trunk trying to lower the engine enough to get the car tipped on the jackstands and the rear brakes on the floor trying to get the engine into the bay...and no bend at all....could be a multipoint mount?

edit: NOOO just looked at the picture of the hitch....no way at all

According to them? 1500lbs.

Weight carry capacity of the aw11 is 400, but I blame the suspension for that. They say the tounge weight is 100lbs for the hitch, so it wouldn't be dealing with much downward force presuming the trailer actually managed to keep the downforce under 100... but you're still towing with it.

wow 1500...um thats like a 2002 4x4 ranger my friend has...which wasnt enough to tow my mr2 home for cheap
not sure what tongue weight is either... if it is an extended bracket hitch or something there is a nice solid piece that the engine mount and exhaust mounts bolt into that could make sense

i'm curious to know what you find out!

I don't know a whole lot about it, but I'm guessing tongue weight would be the downward force exerted on the vehicle from the tongue of the trailer... so assuming most of the weight of the stuff in said trailer was sufficiently balanced on the wheels of the trailer, the downward force of the tongue shouldn't exceed 100lbs. Which is a fair bit, if you think about it. it's like 100lbs of crap in your trunk. Or a small child, roped to your bumper.

So, who can figure this out?

No seriously. I still don't see how that's going to fit my car... I almost want to but it just to see!

What would you be towing with an MR2? Usually it's the '2 that is being towed (as in to the track ha ha) I would not tow much more than a log splitter with it. Maybe a very small utility trailer for track tires. Seriously. Just because "they " claim that's the capacity does not mean it will be safe. The car is too low and has such a small mass. Do you have access to another vehicle with a hitch? Worst case you could rent a pickup.

Honestly? I was thinking nothing for now. I plan on putting a v6 stroker in her next summer, and should the opportunity arise, I'd take another aw11, chop it in half, and turn it into a trailer.

I like to roadtrip. Roadtrips require equipment

It's not the power it's the size /mass of the tow vehicle. (size does matter :lol ) The half-cut AW11 trailer has been done before. In fact, someone in NH has one.

Seriously? Did he do the front half or the back half?

Got pics? That's hot.

I'd be really amused to tow a half an mr2 behind an mr2, though.

IIRC the MR2 owner's manual is the one that states a 1500lb towing capacity.

"PLEASE NOTE: This trailer hitch receiver for Toyota MR2 cars requires drilling to complete installation."

Read the fine print... It would work no problem, as long as your willing to permanently scar your MR2's ass. I once witnessed an MR2 out in the Montana boonies towing a small camper trailer... quite hilarious
