help me out

I am still looking for a mr2 and i seem to have found one...kinda.
It is a 1987 5speed non turbo for 600 dollars. Everything looks perfect on it "like new!!" But has a Rod knock

How much am i looking at to fix if i buy I do not know any good parts for this car and just want it I just want the car to be stock...no need to build something bullet proof.

I guess ebay engine kits are out of the question?

Thanks guys!!

Links would be great...also is the car mk1? what kind of engine do they have?

Sounds like you have a 4A-GELC engine, and you can buy one from mr2tim for $450. Or spend a little less repairing it, maybe more depending on the damage.

You aren't going to get a rebuild for anywhere close to $450... so if you can get an engine certified by a board member for $450 + $200 to ship (estimate) and do the work yourself... then you have a $1500 car.

ok here is what you do, if you really do enjoy mk1's as i do. tell the guy you will have to get a new engine and see if he can come down to 400 or so. if the body is in as good of shape as you say, get a lower mile 4A-GE and swap it. i have yet to attempt to swap engines yet but if you know how to do it yourself, you could have this thing up and running for what, 1500? and my car has 200k. its been beat to hell. some of these guys have past 300k on their engines. 1500 for a car that will keep running is def worth payin for imho. i guess it depends on if you're trying to get profit out of it. i plan on keeping my 2 for years to come...

The bum engine is merely an opportunity to excell.

Pick up a used japanese supercharged engine and stuff it in the car.

The problem with MK I naturally aspired cars is that they are slow and heavy. The cure is take off about 200 pounds of dead weight, and supercharge it. With some mods, you could be driving a 6 second 0-60 MPH car.

At some point, Captain Slow will chime in about how difficult the swap is and how the manly howl of the supercharger would upset his delicate sensibilities. Ignore him.

lawl. really, if i could have bought my 2 that cheep and had an engine put in, i would have. if you get him to go to 400-500 bucks, youll be able to start off with a pretty much clean slate for the price of most cars. 2k easy and if you do all the work it should be rock solid for cheap.

White Road Rocket?

Check this thread from a recent engine build by one of our bro's:
************************************************** *
got this '85 for $800 back in july. when i got it, i thought it had bad rings, so i had the motor rebuilt. i come to find out that it jumped a cog, blowing a hole in the side of my #4 piston. i had the guy bore it out 30 over, grind my valves, and install an aftermarket crank, cams, connecting rods, pistons, and anything else he could find. took 3 months and $1,800, but i'm finally working on install.
************************************************** ***
I'd recommend a JDM short block engine purchase, down here in Florida they are generally regarded as more reliable than one found on the shelf at your local Yard and most likely just might have lower mileage.

Here's some engine sources to ponder.

Damn, I love these white mr2's ! !
