weird oil pressure?
ill keep it short and sweet. i was in the parking lot bs'n with some friends and my car was idle. well it sat for 20 mins or so and when i went to leave, my oil pressure was nonexistant. when i gave it a little gas, it would go up a little but i didn't want to break anything so i parked it and drove a friends RX8. this was a few days ago so tonight, i went out and fired her up. it ran just fine, like it never happened. i am thinkin maybe running idle is a bad idea? can anyone shine some light, thanks!

Have you tried checking your oil levels? That'd be my first guess.
Idling shouldn't be an issue at all. A buddy of mine had a co worker at his shop pull a car out of the bay at about 2 p.m. and we came back the next day and noticed it running around 5 or 6, so it ran all night and day, literally with no issues except the gas light turned on lol. |

i read somewhere that the MR2 is not supposed to run idle for more than 20 min, but it wasnt an oil issue... it was an exhaust gas build up that can cause it to explode... im not sure if im regurgitating the info correctly, but it was somthing along those lines. Again, i dont remember it mentioning anything about an idle causing oil pressure issues, im pretty sure it was a carbon or exhaust gas build up, that once you give it the gas it can catch fire or explode... not like C4 or anything, just a nice pop or bang that can mess with your exhaust system. I dont know if thats true, its just what i read in directions for somthing i was doing.

If I've been running a vehicle hard I'll allow it 5 min. cool down at idle, but that's about it. Oil pressure will read lower at idle at temperature on higher mileage cars.

Oil pressure issue....
the stock gauge is relatively useless.... they don't all read the same, even though the markers are in the same relative position from aw11 to aw11.... factory only requires like 6psi of oil pressure at idle in a 4age... most are significantly higher, but if you let it idle for a really long time I can see it slowly dropping (especially depending on your idle speed). If you really want to know what is going on get a real oil pressure gauge that tells you what the pressure is at. |

I was assuming full synthetics like RP, but i was referring to mixed synthetics with real oil... guess there is not a difference in your answer either way. Sorry for being such a moron.

don't waste your money on 'blends' they are only 10% synth. if you are going to blend, then blend it yourself as it's cheaper.
generally one should not change ove to a synth anything after 60-90k mi. after a change of all selas, etc, then maybe, but i tend to question. |

asking questions does not make you a moron so there is no need to apologize. there is no reason to go out and spend a fortune on synthetic oil if it's just going to leak all over your driveway. just buy a good oil and change it regularly. make sure you check it on occasion so you don't run it dry if there is a leak. |

i put in 3/4's of it royal purple and the last 1/4 is lucas oil stuff. i was told it would thicken the oil and help stop the very small oil issue. really as long as it runs untill i can fine someone to swap it for me, i am fine. |

so, you are using seal 'sweller' as your fix? yech! sorry if that is harsh, but i am NOT known for being touchy-feely with what my opinion is. as for your oil issue...it's probably due to using synthetic on old seals.
