aw11 is usdm mr2 mk1, no, and no
You would have to swap in a 4agze engine to get a supercharger. If you get a gze block, or have a later mr2 (closer to 90) you might have the stronger block and could just build the bottom end and turbo |

united states domestic market. basically if you dont have a right hand drive its an aw11.
especially if its your first car i woudlnt mess around with turbos just yet. Get used to driving and maintaing your car. Try a smaller mod such as a cone filter, or something like that. It takes alot of understanding beyond turning wrenches to get a sucessful FI mod, or even motor swap. try flushing the coolant too. you dont want to end up over your head |

HKS made an aftermarket SC and turbo kit for the 4age, good luck finding them tho. They appear on yahoo japan from time to time. A guy on mr2oc picked one up a while back.

All mk1's built are aw11's.
MOST aw11's that are right hand drive are not usdm. All jdm(japanese domestic market) are right hand drive mk1 mr2s, and are aw11's. All euro right hand drive ,also considered jdm, are aw11's. Whats gonna blow your mind is, that it is widely practiced in the mr2 world that all aw11 mk1 mr2s made from late 84(which are considered 85) to 86 are refered to as mk1(a)'s and the 87-89 mk1's are refered to as mk1(b)'s. But congrats on the "2", and drop a line if you need anything, do my best to help out, I dont consider myself a guru, but I have owned a mk1 mr2 since I was 17, and I am working on 39, so I have pretty much been there and done it. I currently have 4, and had 7 at one time. And yes all 4 run and drive fine, One is an 85 with an 89 gze(supercharged motor) swapped in with a n/a tranny, and 2 86's one 5 speed and one automatic, and an 89 that was supercharged but, I just finished a n/a(normally aspirated) motor with a ported head for it and I am running the s/c tranny with it....it really can wind up. |

I wouldn't agree with the USDM vs JDM being determined purely on what side of the car the steering wheel is. There are lots of countries that are LHD and lots that are RHD.
In any event, all 84-89 non supercharged MR2's are AW11's regardless of where they are found. The supercharged models technically are AW16's, but usually they fall under the "aw11" category for ease of conversation. There are 2 versions of the AW11, early and late. The switch took place in 1987. In 1987 the side vent, front lower valance, tail lights, rear brakes, the interior, and some minor changes to the electrical and engine took place. The t-top version made it's way out in 1987 and the supercharged version came out in 1988 (stateside). There are no 'aftermarket' kits that will supercharge or turbocharge an n/a car. The HKS kit that was referred to was meant for an already supercharged car, and is very rare to find. That being said, there tons of first gen MR2's that people have either turbocharged or supercharged which were not originally boosted. Do your homework & research what it takes. If you're pretty green, then it will be a large task but if you accomplish it you will learn a lot. If you are pretty good with a wrench and understand basics of fabrication, boosting a first gen MR2 can be pretty easy. |

I'm surprised this hasn't been cleared up. Please carefully read the following:
USDM= United States Domestic Market, as in, it was manufactured to be sold in the UNITED STATES. JDM= Japanese Domestic market, as in, manufactured to be sold in JAPAN. Please do not confuse this anymore. Doesn't matter what side the steering wheel is on. It makes no difference. If a car is made to be sold in the U.K, it is Right hand drive. Doesn't make it JDM. An MR2 made to be sold in Germany is left hand drive. Doesn't make it USDM. |
