I'd say if you have a hard top, sell it for a premium because it's a hard top then go buy t-tops. Don't cut up something that someone else probably wants.

just my $.02

don't know about that one.....

out of my 9 or 10 mr2's I've had.... (gotta type this out to keep track...)
1st red 86 was hardtop
2nd black 87 was/is hardtop
3rd red 86 was/is sunroof
4th red85 was a hardtop
5th 86 sherwood was sunroof
6th black 86 was sunroof
7th silver 85 was hardtop
8th silver 87 is t-top
9th white 86 is hardtop

so, out of 9... 5 were hardtops (and I wasn't even looking for them). T-top didn't come out until 1987, so all of the 84's, 85's, and 86's were either sunroof or hardtop.... and there were also hardtops in 87-89.

It's a mk1 it's not going to get all that much. Mk1's sit for sale for a long time before they sell. I wouldnt really reccomend doing it personally. Up at the Bear mountain run there was a girl with a mk1 with an aftermarket sunroof. It was next to an original sunroof car and you could deffinatly be known that it was aftermarket. There are some shops around that will do it. My sister's car has an aftermarket one on her car and it's held up without any leaks. I dont know if the'll be able to do a pop out one like stock though.

If you are keen get a full top off another car cut off and reweld at the point where you cut your roof off. You need another 2 to do this but you can do them both at the same time and if you do it right no one will be able to tell it's no light task though normally reserved for cars "worth" doing it to or racecars that want a hardtop. Definately be careful doing this it is structural work and does require careful cuts.

i wouldnt do sunroof. I'd make the whole top pop off. but i cant even imagine how i'd make the lockdown mechanisms and seal it and stuff...it could be considerable if i'd seen a sucessful one though

imho, you should cut up a t/sun top. get a roof from someones hard top parts car. people who are into the hard tops are into them because they are better for track use. i don't think they could take another model and weld a hard top on they wouldn't get the same perormance they are after. find someone who loves 2's and really wants a hard top. i can say this but if it were my car, i'd be attached and probly would cut it off anyways haha

thats what i hear, and it makes sense. the t-tops and sun roofs have extra weight up top. also the HT's are more rigid and stiff. i love my T-Top's minus the leaking tho...

well, you ARE the expert, but around this area, i've seen maybe a handful of MkI hardtops since 1985.

it's simple to figure out.... the 87-89's are typically more popular and there were 3 roof choices.... the hardtop was probably less common in the later years.... the earlier years there were only 2 choices....

until someone can prove that maybe 5% of all AW11's were hardtops, they aren't rare.

**edit**

also, I'm on the west coast, where there's a high concentration of imported cars (come FOB here... then to ship across the country costs money... as you move inwards, the price of the cars go up)..... that probably plays into it as well.
