HKS ECU

I found this item on ebay. Does it replace the stock ecu, or is it a piggy back type ecu?

How does it work?

Used HKS Fcon ECU + GGC + Harness Toyota MR2 AW11 4AGZE:eBay Motors (item 290354273448 end time Oct-28-09 00:54:43 PDT)

I'm going to say piggy.
Beware of the older HKS units. They are hard to get exact numbers out of, so if you buy it and install be careful. I have a HKS VPC and I really just don't trust knobs.

basically it allows you to fine tune the factory programing without the hassle/expense of a standalone ecu

My Google Map

The main unit (F-Con) was a piggyback fuel controller that plugged inbetween the oem ecu and the engine wire harness. It simply modified the ecu injector pulses based upon information it got from a map sensor that was supplied with the unit. It only allowed you a general +/- fuel ratio across the entire rpm range, via a dashpot switch inside the unit. They supposedly had a few different chips that were designed for various levels of boost, but I have never been able to find much of any information on that, and HKS never said anything about it in the instructions that came with the units. They were built by HKS to use with either their 4age turbo or supercharger units, which they sold for a short period of time. Although, I am assuming that they could probably be used on non-forced induction engines as well, due to their simplicity.

The smaller unit (GCC) was an additional piggyback unit that plugged into the first unit (F-Con), and gave you finer control over the fuel ratio. It provided 6 set rpm points at which you could adjust the fuel ratio over something like a -5 to +10% range. For some reason HKS later changed it's adjustability to only 5 rpm points.

The same F-Con was most likely used for both turbo and supercharged applications, as they were labled with both types of induction on the front of the casing.
