starter problems

when the engine is cold and i go to start sometimes the starter seems like the starter is not fully retracking off the flywheel. Does anyone know what the problem might be

i actually seem to be havign the same problem every now and again.... i go to start it and the motor keeps turning over, even with me outside the car with the key in my hand.. any reasons??

Stuck starter solenoid. When you turn the key, it energises a coil, pulls the solenoid closed, making contact with the + from the battery, starts the motor, and when you release the switch the solenoid is supposed to retract, but if its stuck, it doesn't. Happens to mine when its under 30*F. Either replace your starter or get a rebuild kit. You can also just try lubing the solenoid too.

seeing as the starter is a pain to get off I think I just might trying to lube it

You got to be kidding!! no lubrication at all in the starter,
Just go to you local parts store or local Toyota dealer and get a set of new contacts,
The reason for the sticking is theare "worn"... you have to remove the starter

Worn contacts don't cause the solenoid to stick. Dried up grease does.
