Driveable?

Hey everyone. I'm new to these boards and want to get my hands on an mr2. I'm looking at one for $650, but I haven't seen pics yet. It needs a couple things to get running - alternator & belt, battery, and struts. My question is, if I buy a new battery for it and put that in, will the car be driveable? I'm gonna have to drive it about 250 miles back home. But if I need the alt. and belt how much will that cost to have done by a garage?

Thanks for any help, I'm just wondering if I can get my hands on this mr2 or if I'm gonna have to wait it out a little longer.

if you throw just a battery into it, it will definatly eventually die on you on your way home. Probably not a good idea to do that. So you will definatly need an alternator and might as well change out the belt while your doing it. I dont know what a shop will charge you though for it, if you mechanically inclined, its really not that hard to do.

Where are you located? Perhaps you can find a local to help you with the alternator. Doesnt take more than 2 hours or so to do it.

i drove a 99 cougar over 300mi with a bad alternator. Put in a Brand new battery and kept driving. Only because i was in the middle of a 700mi road trip.

Thanks for the input! I'm not very good mechanically, so it would probably take me and a friend more than two hours to change the alt. and belt. Are the alternator and belt required for anything besides charging the battery? Cause if that's all, if the battery dies, couldn't i recharge it with jumper cables hooked up to another car? Or if I'm really desperate, put the battery from the other car in the mr2 and have my dd charge the dead battery?

I'm located in Harrisburg, Pa. and the car is located outside of Ocean City, Md. So finding a local person who will help me for free will probably be tough. I'm gonna call back and ask for some pics and more info about the struts. I only had a short conversation with this lady. Do you guys think the blown struts will keep the car immobile?

Speaking from experience, if the aternator is faulty the car will not hold a decent charge while driving. Even if you change out the battery, the car will eventually die while driving since the alternator isn't doing its job effectively causing the battery to lose charge and the vehicle to stall. If it were me, I would first find out more info on the situation, then if you are still interested, purchase an alternator and belt and maybe even coordinate with a local shop to do the install. If the shop isn't too far away, you should be able to drive to it if you have a good beginning charge on the battery. As for the struts, you can drive on them being blown the car just won't ride well at all. Although it isn't really recommended to do this, but it can be done. Hope this helps
