Thumbs up Expoding Tire

So the other day, my tire sounded flat on the free way. So i drove to the gas station, and sure enough it looked flat to me. I began to put air in it, measuring the PSI after every few seconds, then all out of the blue, BANG, i have NEVER seen a blown tire causing this much damage. I have to replace the fender, and the lower body kit skirt, and the wheel well lining. If i hadnt been sitting next to the fender when it went off, it probably would have ripped the fender clear off the car. Now i have a fat bruse and probably permanent hearing damage in my left ear. WOW what a day

Whoa, that's some crazy ****. I have never heard of a tire doing that before, and I worked at a Goodyear dealership for 2 years. I can't see from the picture, what brand tire is that?

Check around the for sale section and ebay. It might also be possible to locate one in a junkyard.

That's what happens when you try to put air in a tire that was run flat. Very dangerous, you're lucky nothing hit you!

When I worked for a tire shop, we refused to repair a tire that was run flat as it was very dangerous. Especially if it was a tire off of a rig, those things hold 200 PSI and when they blow, it's fatal.

^ Oh yeah, definately, we wouldn't repair a tire with sidewall damage either.

This should never happen to a good tire. As Dustin said there are plenty of other tires out there that hold a hella lot more psi than what you put in. Even the mini-spare is supposed to hold 60 psi. you can't tell me that if the tire looked a little low an you only put a little bit of air in that this tire was in excess of 60+ psi.

I wished i had taken a pic of the tire on my Saturn. We drove from Chicago to central PA a c ouple of weeks ago. On the way out I noticed a little bit of vibration in the front end. Nothing major, so I figured it was probably out of balance and that I would take it in when we got home. After cruising round some pretty crazy mountinas, we headed for home. As I got to the Ohio/Indiana border, the vibration turned into a carnival ride. Expecting to see a flat tire, I was amazed to see it still inflated. When I looked at it further, I noticed that a cord on the inner half of the tread gave way and the inner most part of the tire was sticking out through the tread and the sidewall. I'm really surprised that it didn't blow. Needless to say, the mini got more than 20 miles at more than 45MPH as were were still 200+ miles from home. In hind sight, I would have been in a world of hurt if that tire had blown on one of the mountain roads.
