looking at an 1986 mr2

hi all,
i'm new around. i got a some questions reguarding an 86 mr2. theirs an mr2 im looking at for 1500 its got 181k miles on it it look beautiful inside and out this car has been garage kept for about 5-7 years, what do i look for mechanically wise on these cars? thanks for the help.

have the owner start it while standing behind it looking at the exhaust for smoke go for a drive and check that it shifts smooth" Sincros go bad in the #2&3 gear as well as a 5th gear popout when you accel in 5th. thats a start

since it might need a new motor in time how much am i looking at spending to convert it over to a 3sgte(computer and wiring harness included) or an 4agze(ecu included).

The Mk1.5 conversion (3S-GTE) is alot of work and cn be pretty expensive, but theres a ton of information on the net about it.

Putting a 4A-GZE in, however, is alot easier and alot less expensive, but also won't get you nearly as much power immediately or down the road.
The 4A-GZE is only good for a little over 200hp. Don't ask me why, it doesnt really make much sense to me, but thats what the best tuners in the world say so I believe em.
If you swap in the GZE you're looking at a 30hp increase over stock and a fairl substantial boost in acceleration. You're 0-60 will improve dramatically and acceleration at speed will also feel alot better.
With a pulley change you can be making another 30hp which will have an effect not as profound, but still noticeable.
An S/C MkI with just a pulley (keep in mind that with higher boost increases you may need to change injectors) can net you 0-60 times in the 5 sec range and quartermile times in the 13s.
I know that may not sound very fast and furious, but believe me it's plenty fast.

im not looking at something thats dramatically fast i just want something that keep up with most cars. how much hp can i get out of the stock motor (4age) by doing just motor work alone? would i be able to get more then the 4agze? i just rid of my 04 gt mustang (running 13.7 stock) and i want something that atleast can come close to that.

A good port and polish job on the head can give a lot but if you do a whole motor you'll be happy with what you have. I cann't wait to start building another motor for mine i bought it for a daily driver it was smoking BADDLY $400 rebuild kit and a few hours in the drive and it runs fine.

how much would i be looking at? how much would a new 4age 16 valve run me? and what websites would i be able to find parts and a new motor?

where are you located and i'll start looking. parts are easy the hard part is fir you to find a good machine shop. If your close to me i know of a good shop here. if not find guys who live close to you that have had work done and ask them where they had theirs done.

Building power with an NA 4age is difficult, expensive, and has decreasing returns. The highest horsepower NA 4age is the Formula Atlantic - around 250 hp, with no streetable drivability, and a 12k rpm powerband top end. For the most part, work on an NA engine, for the same price as a 4agze, the GZE will have more power. When you're only dealing with 1.6L, forced induction really is the way to go. I've yet to ever hear of a 4agze making over 200hp without being on nitrous, or twin charged (or turbo, but that doesn't have any belt drive SC), but Turbos let you make pretty much whatever power you want. A good head (TED Components, Canada) with cams, P&P, and valve train will cost you a good couple grand for one that will make your car "faster." There are lots of little things that can get you 3hp here and 1hp there, but they don't add up in terms of cost to just getting a supercharged motor, and slapping a huge pulley on it. I'm a really big fan of the Non Stop Tuning 180mm pulley, which is pretty much the biggest one you can get. I would say it will be around 170 hp to the ground, but it all depends on your hardware, IC, etc. If you really want to build a 4age that will make good na power, call TED Components, and tell him what you want to do. He's one of the biggest experts in race 4age's, along with Hasselgrens, and Lloynings which is over here in Oregon (might have spelled those wrong). I would tell you to get a stock crank, have it lightened, shotpeened rods, custom higher compression pistons (I like Vineola), a good street or race head setup with cams of your choice, and a good tuner to program either MSnS-E or some expensive EMS. By the time you get all of that done, you should be at or a little above stock GZE horsepower, but nowhere near the torque. My $.02
