I am pretty objective since I have had several of both generations. Either way, two things I like better about MKI's (what the thread was originally about)...For $2000-$2500 you can buy a near mint MKI, versus a trashed MKII. For NA's in the US - there is no contest about the engine either...a 7500 RPM screamer versus a stodgy Camry engine that happens to be attached to the wrong gear ratios (meant for the JDM engine). I guess if I had never driven or owned an MKI then I would be a MKII snob also (because they look better than almost anything else) but a few hours behind the wheel and it is a totally different ballgame. Don't get me wrong, I could also do a thread on things I like better about the MKII...so please don't pick my post apart. Either way, $2000-ish for a near mint car that actually still looks cool to 85% of the world, gets 30+ MPG and feels like a slow Indy Car is not bad.
The ultimate MR2 however would be a MKI (mechanically) that looked just like an MKII. |

I love the Mk1, it's like a kids dream come true...I don't know about you guys; but I've wanted to drive a spaceship ever since I was a little kid. The MK1 gets me just that much closer to achieving my goal.

People who say they dont' like a MK1's looks just haven't seen a nice one. Just look at the number of ugly new cars and compare it to a MK1/AW11. You might think twice about calling it ugly.
Anyway, I like MK2's also, but only the turbo. Todd 87sc www.cardomain.com/id/tksmr2 |

I loved my 86 MKI even though it had more bondo than metal which didn't give it a lot of chassis rigidity. I would love to have one of each gen, but space and $$ is limited. For the price, you can't beat the power of the MK2 turbo.
I liked the headlight switch on the MK1. It was much easier to tell what position it was in. I didn't like it when I had to replace it though...$$ |

Ah, you just need to be a bargain hunter for MK1 parts. Everything is cheap if you know were to look and sometimes those switches can be re-soldered to fix them. I've got 2 or 3 extra switches at home. My original one is still good so far. Todd 87sc www.cardomain.com/id/tksmr2 |

I love mk1s cause they are dirt cheap to fix up! got my 87 for 200$ WITH an engine (snapped cam) dont feel like trying to figure out any other issues with it so swapping in a GZE. but suspension, brakes, everything can be had on ebay for next to nothing.

I simply bought a near mint MKI for less than many people pay for a set of rims and / or body kit for their MKII. Here is my current MKI - and I bought it exactly as seen below other than the rims I added - The only work I have ever done on it in a year of ownership is two oil changes and some cleaning. You guys that were at the meet a couple weeks ago in Asheville can attest as to the car's condition. |
