Cost of Engine rebuild... I know, vague question...

Hi - I'm in the process of acquiring a used 1986 MR2 from a coworker. According to him, his brother ran it out of oil and the engine died.. other than that, information is a little limited.

I'm wondering what the cost of rebuilding a motor that was run out of oil would cost? Or would it be best to swap a motor with a used one... and what would I expect to pay a shop to do it... I'm in San Diego and import shops are on every corner around here, so... and I'm looking for a simple, normal stock car, nothing fancy or fast or souped-up... just plain stock...

I know the question is pretty vague, but thought this would be a good starting point... oh, and I trust the coworker enough not to totally try to rip me off or anything, so I'm sure he's being honest about the car and how it died. He's asking for $500 and other than the engine it only needs a few cosmetic issues resolved and maybe new tires...

thanks.

It will be probably 300-400 to get a used junkyard motor. If you do all the engine work yourself, like take it out and tear it down bare and then have a machine shop machine everything and you buy new bearings and gaskets you'll be looking at $600-$700 and then you have to assemble it yourself and put it back in. Will be cheaper and faster to get another motor. It might last longer and be more reliable to get it rebuilt but more work and money on your part. For a machine shop to tear it apart, machine it, buy parts and gaskets and assemble it, you are looking at $1,000-$1,200 probably.
