Is the play in the splines?
My experience with the shaft is that the play is where it joins the steering column, not the splined end. The shaft is flat on 2 sides and a little wear on those edges where it enters the column results in the looseness. You can access it from inside the car to see if this is right.
I made 2 aluminum "splints" that I ran from the column to the shaft flat areas, and then attached with 2 hose clamps. It works very well. I believe the purpose of the shaft is to allow in/out play as the suspension goes over bumps. I'm not sure if welding is a great idea. Hope this helps |
