Looking for a fully functioning Wiper Switch

I have a wiper switch which does not return the wipers back to the bottom or starting position and I don't have the intermittent function (expect for the mist (manual) position).

I'm located in Austin TX and have a 85 Mk1 (6/85). Anyone in a ~300 mi radius of Austin and knows of where one of these might be, I'd welcome a PM.

Take it appart and solder it back up. If your wipers are in the up position as the resting position, your wiper motor has to be rotated 180 degrees.

What are we taking apart, the wiper switch or the wiper motor? I suppect the switch.. am I correct? As for the wiper motor, is this rotation a result of a repair gone bad at some point or do these motor creep over time?

I know I've not touch this part, and when the wiper blades move all is nice and smooth. When I want them to stop they stop wherever I turn them off. It's random, it seems.

Light switch has the same problem as the wiper switch on some cars. They are easy to take appart and it only takes a cheapy soldering iron to fix.

Wiper Switch Write-up

The write up that Muffinman supplied did the trick, great resource!! Now if I can only figure out what's not working on my headlight retract system! I can manually close them, and they open when I flip the switch, but they won't retract when flip the switch to the off position...

PS sorry to be soo long with a response, but it's been a busy end of year and beginning 2010!!

Yeah, Tested both that I have and they both fail the continuity test, particularly between pins 2 and 3, 2 and 5 and 3 and 5. Took one and tried the soldier trick, and no joy... No change in the continuity test.

Hey Austin and all..about those headlights

You might check the cylindrical 5 wire connector underneath the headlights. It's engineered to rest upside down and collects water (and corrosion) on the interior due to rubber gasket shrinkage at the top. As mr3 indicated, this too can be corrected with a soldering gun after you cut out this bogus connector and reconnect the wires to each other. It's a simple procedure.

4 of my 5 cars have had this problem.

The relays are generally bulletproof unless the system has been tampered with.

As Jackstand keeps telling us look to the wiring first.

Defectively engineered headlight connector

Here's my last set of pictures on the Forum about this problem connector that affects many aspects of the headlight function.

It's easy to work on if you pull the headlight bulb.

Tim

Thanks for askin' Muff
