sorry to hear that but mr2s are very sensitive with the electrical wiring....any could cause the fire if the cables are not placed right.

yea right!! I wish...They guy who sold it Charto911 won'teven return calls...the mechanic says he has many mr2's under his belt and this happened under my watch..car was sold as-is...not even looking for all the money back...anything would show some type of professionalism and honor. This is why I am posting this so other people will be aware...everyone has a choice..

hat looks like a pretty good fire. A bad ground would not cause a fire of that magnitude to burn the car like that. I would think that the fire was accelerated with either oil or gas to burn hot enough to melt the car.

However, I don't think the previous owner is to blame here. When the car was sold to you, it was obviously in good working condition, or you wouldn't have bought it. It is a used, almost 20 year old car. Once the ownership transfers hands, it us up to you to maintain the car.

Did you have a basic road safety kit in the car? Did it not include a small fire extinguisher?

As many of us have mentioned, grounds going up are a very common issue with MR2s. I too had one of my MR2s many years ago catch on fire due to a lost grown burning my ebrake cables. The situation was taken care of with my small fire extinguisher, and 10 minutes on these forums gave me the cause and solution to the fire.

If you do buy an MR2 again, you will now what you need to check on. I'm sure that the previous owner sold you what he thought was a very well put together car. Just because he didn't beat on the car before he sold it does not mean that the swap was done wrong or incorrectly. Frankly, I've seen multiple threads now where you have bad mouthed the seller, and I'm very surprised you have not been banned for it. Anyone who's been in this community knows that when you buy a used MR2, you are buying a USED CAR that can and will potentially have issues. Did you inspect the car after you bought it? Did you take it anywhere to have it inspected?

While it is unfortunate that this happened, there is nothing on the sellers part that could have been done to avoid this. I strongly feel that the previous seller didn't half-thread a bolt holding the ground wire hoping that it would burn the car to the ground. Not to mention, this could have been avoided with proper car care on your part, and an $8 car safety kit.
Is anyone else getting the same feeling here?

Mark

Let save everyone...as this was already dealt with on the mr2oc forum:

I thought this was a community where you can trust the others to sell quality products..wether it be used parts, new parts, used cars..whatever. I seen numerous posts with unhappy transactions where buyers and sellers actually comment on the situation and get it resolved. I am yet to hear from both Charto911 or DrWonderEyes on any of my threads???.....As for maintenace..I owned the car a month..what should I maintain the first month?...the ad clearly states all new fluids, seals, gaskets, not to mention a swapped engine with 60K miles.....ect. Read the facts before making ridiculous comments....I would of been happy if the engine had seized or transmission went out...I could fix that and kept on chugging along....what can I do with this?? Fires don't just start for no reason...

Charto911 PMed me this. I refrained from posting it at first, because he doesn't seem to want to get involved.

Hey I just wanted to thank you as I just read the funny post from Jm91: the guy who's car unfortuantley caught on fire and is blaming me for it, Just for the record Im not going to post on there to stir the pot but it was a quality car with a motor bought from a board member and another board member swapped the engine and it did drive fine as I drove it about 400 miles before I sold it to him over a month ago and than he has electronics installed and than it catches on fire and blames me. I have 3 mr2's and the pic posted on the trader is of another one so he won't sabotage the real one when it goes up on craigslist or auction... Anyway thanks for defending me for just selling a car that ran fine when I had it and obviously so for another month. I know its pretty obvious I didn't purposely sell a car that would catch on fire months later as I don't even know if thats possible but thanks for the defense and a true sense of reality.

"I know its pretty obvious I didn't purposely sell a car that would catch on fire months later as I don't even know if thats possible but thanks for the defense and a true sense of reality".....it was a month not months...electronics caused this fire..sure??I installed an alarm and a radio..I guess that burned the ____ out of the car!!...car is gone..seller's gone....lost my money....kill the post!!...There's nothing else for me here...just trying to sell the stuff I thankfully did not install and move on....Thanks Superfly!! I believe in karma...everyone will have their day...I guess this was a hard lesson for me to learn as stated before....must of screwed someone in my past..

"I have 3 mr2's and the pic posted on the trader is of another one so he won't sabotage the real one when it goes up on craigslist or auction"....I forget to mention this was already on craigslist and mr2trader before this happened...good luck with the sale and hopefully the buyer will get a better deal than I did...

I guess this was his way of helping me out!! Kill the post!! Again guys...this is going nowhere since the seller has clearly made it aware he is not addressing the issue with his friend Superfly....
Call it a day until the next poor sucker starts up a thread...

Charto911...thought you were a honest guy...not taking some responsibility is just shamefull and unethical...you know I did nothing to damage the car...I was actually trying to restore it and even letting DrWonderEyes do some of the work since he was the mechanic for the car. We even spoke about this...having him fix the rest of the stuff and not charge me an arm or a leg for the work..AGAIN THANKS A LOT FOR HELPING ME OUT...a salesman will be a salesman i guess...I am one myself but my ethics are totally different...

sorry you lost your car. that sucks. my MKI caught fire once, but i was able to put it out before any major damage happened.

having said that...

hey man, you bought a modified car... what can you do? i dont understand why you think a seller would sabotage the car once he's got his money? i mean, it's not like he's going to get the car back, soooo.....

sounds like maybe you are just trying to throw the blame somewhere, even if it was either A: nobody's fault, just bad things happen sometimes or B: you were doing over the legal speed limit, maybe even racing, something got hot/overpressurized/melted and caught the car on fire.

these things happen, most of the time because of nobody's fault. old parts, old cars, sometimes things will wear out alot faster once they've been messed with. something that looked perfectly good when the swap was done may have well detiorated since then, causing a fuel/oil leak causing the fire.

Here's a post I just found which is similar to the turbo description: Upgraded 60-1 CT26 Turbo with 3 inch Downpipe. DrWonderEyes quoted as "good but laggy. made the car sound like it had a monster turbo": I guess I got his left over and he told be he went through 2 blown engines...
MR2 Owners Club Message Board&#8482

Was not racing...Just driving crusing around 85 mph...if that's considered racing I don't know...I guess it's A....I never said anything about sabotage...where are you guys getting this from??...It was a brand new swap...at least take SOME responsibity is all I'm saying....

i apologize, i misread something you posted on the other board. but you have to remember, you'd been driving the car for a month. that's a long time for something to happen to a car that is way beyond the control of the person/s that did the swap. who knows, it could've been a sharp peice of metal or a rock that peirced a fuel line. i know i wouldnt take responsibility if i sold a car to someone and a month later something like that happened, unless i know for a fact that it was directly my fault. i wouldnt expect anyone to take responsibility for repairs on a car after i purchased it unless they previously said they would.

i know and understand that you are mad, but did the car give you any reason prior to this to think that the swap was sloppy? in fact, you knew it was a swapped car, whether it be turbo to turbo, or NA to turbo, you should've taken it to a trusted mechanic and/or a toyota dealership to have it checked before you bought the car. that's what i did when i bought my last car. had it checked out by a local dealership (an out of town dealership was having a big sell a thon here) and they pointed out a few things that could've been taken care of. so i made the other dealership deal with the problems before i signed anything.

This would be sad if it weren't so pathetic. Do you remember that time a guy sold an MR2 to someone and rigged it so that the buyer wouldn't have an $8 fire extinguisher, and the car would catch on fire exactly a month later?! ..o wait, that never happened ever in the history of Mankind.
