A/C cpmpressor---clutch or something more?

About a year ago, my a/c just stopped working. It used to run great. I ASSumed that it needed a charge so I bought the kit from Advance and gave it a shot. Still not working. At the time I didn't have the funds or inclination to mess with a possible compressor problem. Recently, I looked underneath and found that the idler pulley had fallen off. I re-installed the pulley and a new belt. Immediately after starting engine, it flung the belt off. I tried to turn the compressor clutch by hand but it won't budge. The compressor turns with the crankshaft drive belt. ( I assume....it still has it's belt attached. I'm not real good with a/c systems, especially clutches. Do I need to remove the whole compressor? If so, can just the clutch be removed/replaced/repaired? Thanks for any insight you may be able to give on this subject!

yes the clutch alone can be replaced but your better off replacing both the compressor and clutch. the clutch should free spin , it only engages when power is sent to it. so is there still a belt on the compressor or not?

Yes. the belt is still on the compressor. It worked great until it broke!!!!! IS that a job that needs to have the compressor pulled out to get to the clutch? I would rather have a new compressor, but I've just dropped close to 2K.....coffers are running low (As is my wife's patience/understanding!) Thanks for your help!

just a few questions i should of asked before:

1-when you turn the air on does the compressor come on?
2-when you tried to add freon was the compressor running or not?
3-have you checked the fuses to make sure the clutch is getting power?
