I take it you bought an after-market steering wheel with NO air bag, right?
If so, look in my siggy & click on "HERE" for an article I wrote on how to install an after-market steering wheel, turn off the air bag warning light, make the horn work & even how-to relocate the cruise control. Daniel ![]() |

well i know how to install it and take it all off, its just. i dont know where to get a slip ring to MAKE my horn work lol. theres a wire that connects to the centercap where the wire connects to a metal thing. but theres suppost to be a metal thing (slip ring i believe?) sticking up to let the current flow through so the horn works. but i dont have the slip ring
where can i get one? |

The horn will NOT work with the spiral cable that the air bag OEM wheel is plugged into. You will have to remove the spiral cable, make some sort of a devise to contact the horn ring on the back of the after-market steering wheel's hub to get the horn to work.
Are you referring to the horn ring on the back of the hub? If so, the hub you bought may not have one & therefore you will not be able to get the horn to work. Look at the pic in my article where my hand is holding the Momo hub, see the metal ring around the back end of the hub? That is the horn ring & you have to have one to get your horn to work. Are you referring to the steering wheel itself? If so, all you need should have been packaged with the wheel to install it. UNLESS you bought the after-market steering wheel used, then it may be missing parts. IF that is the case you may have to find an auto parts/tuner store that sells the brand of steering wheel you bought & get what you need there. On EVERY after-market steering wheel the horn button should have 2 wires. One that is grounded to the wheel or hub & one that makes contact with the hub, so the horn ring on the hub will touch whatever you make, to contact the hub's horn ring to the wire that is for the horn on the MR2. Look in my article there that I linked you to. IT is NOT just how to install a wheel, that is easy. The spiral cable can not be used with MOST after-market hubs & can only be used with very very few. Either way, with or without the spiral cable, you will have to wire up something to connect the hub to get the horn to work. If I could see a pic I might be able to tell you what you need. IF i knew what brand hub & steering wheel you bought I might be able to tell you. But, not giving that info does not help me help you, so I really have no idea what you are talking about. I installed my Momo Corse wheel the way I show in that article & the horn works perfectly. Hopefully I have answered your question here or in the article. But, without knowing what you bought or having a pic, I can only tell you what I know. I have put on MANY after-market steering wheels on MR2's & other vehicles & I am sorry but I don't know what you are referring to. Daniel ![]() Last edited by mr2boost; 10-11-2008 at 03:47 PM. |

it had 1 wire grounded to the ring on the back of the hub, which connects to the steering wheel center cap. all good so far? on your pics, it looks like look theres the plastic piece with the caution tab, i have that but is there like a horn pin or ring suppost to be there to make contact with the horn or? im missing something in my steering setup for the horn.
but i dont know what it is or looks like because ive never seen it |

Sounds like your hub may be missing the brass horn contact ring that is on the back side of the hub (front side is the side that the wheel itself connects to the hub). If you don not have that horn ring, you will have to get a hub that has one OR find a way to make an electrical contact with the horn wire from the spiral cable harness to the after-market hub, that will allow you to turn the wheel.
Some hubs do not come with horn rings for they are for racing only (no horn needed on the track). Plus, they will not come with a horn ring sometimes when replacing an air bag equipped steering wheel for they are supposed to be for "Off Road Use Only" kind-of like a Down Pipe is for "off road use only" you know what I mean. Making a wire or metal tab that will contact to the horn ring is the only way I know to get the horn to work with an air bag equipped MR2 that has a NON air bag after-market steering wheel attached to it. FWIW I do not know of anyone that has made the horn work using a hub that has NO horn ring. Daniel ![]() |
