Broke the trip odometer...fixable?
I just keep breaking one thing after another...probably should just stop working on cars while I'm still ahead.
Anyway I was putting the gauge cover back on after installing a boost gauge and I forgot about the trip odometer thing...anyway the trip odometer is now broken. Are these things rebuildable with parts from another cluster? Or am I pretty much screwed. Its not #1 priority but I'd like to get it fixed. Its a 93 if it matters. There is no longer a spring and it doesn't turn either. Anyway thanks. |

You can replace it (I used one from another odometer when I did it) but you will need a lot of patience and self control if you break something. Or you could replace the whole odometer assembly and set it to the miles your car has on it. Odometer fraud is based on operations like this. And no I am not a fraudster just break a lot of things lol.

Yeah, I don't want to do anything that would raise any suspicions of the odometer, as the car only has 24,000 miles on it.

Mine is broken on my 92 as well. When I took it apart I found the hollow plastic shaft that holds the gears in place broken, causing it to stay on zero. I can't see an easy way to fix it, although an elastic band worked for a couple days. lol Think small delicate plasic parts that are in the middle of a much bigger mechanism. If yours is the same then I doubt they sell the parts and it would be very difficult to take the whole thing apart to replace it anyway. You are probably stuck with the choice of replacing it or living with a broken trip odometer but you could pull the cluster to be sure.
