Post Emissions: High Hydrocarbons

Hey guys,

I took my 91 5sfe over to the shop for emissions. It was down for quite some time and just recently put a "new" used motor in it. One of those 50k or less japanese motors.

Anyways.. I took it through emissions, everything passed with no issues except my Hydrocarbon Emissions was high. Usually this is from unburnt fuel so I figured i'd let you fuel pro's help me.

Since the test, I did a tune up of the plugs(ngk), wires(pro start oe replacement), cap+rotor(oem), and cleaned up my air filter. I also bought one of those fuel system cleaners, "Gaurented to pass", and i'm burning off a tank today to bring it back to emissions tomorrow. Do you recommend anything else that is relativly easy to do, or should i just wing it for another $20.

P.S. - The old wires were preeeeetty old, they didnt even really snap into the plugs. The plugs looked clean, normal wear, and the cap was corroded while the rotor looked good(i replaced both anyways).

Thanks for any hints or tricks. Bringing the car back tomorrow more than likely so quick advice will help.

Whoops, I did not realize the date of this thread...sorry for the resurrection, but the info is still valid.

Since you have a high hc reading, an easy band aid would be to add an oxygenated fuel, aka alcohol, aka e85. Last time I checked, all of those snake oil type of "pass emissions" products were predominately alcohol. 5-10% of e85 might get you there, but I'm just guessing.
