TRD Quickshifter + TRD (Tall) Knob

I've read about how the plastic ring on the shifter needs to be removed in order for this combination to work, but how exactly can this be done? I should be getting my parts this week and I want to be ready. Pics would be helpful

Where did you get your TRD quickshifter? I called my dealer and said they were discontinued.

I'd imagine sawing it off is the what has to be done. Twosrus had some a while ago, might check there.

I got mine from Aaron at Lithia Toyota. And the ring is actually metal (not plastic). I just want to make sure I don't damage the shifter in any way. I already have both parts. Has anybody done this before?

I'm about too. A board member 'deuce girl' (found mostly in the socal section) does some awesome welding. She moved the ring down so the the knob will fit the shifter. It looks great If you PM her, I'm sure you guys could work something out....

They have been discontinued but some places still have them in stock, I ordered
1 from Apexi, Blitz, HKS, Nismo, Greddy and other JDM Parts direct from Japan - Nengun Performance towards the end of May and the site still says they've got em. You've just gotta wait for it to ship from Japan.

Oh... I kinda already cut the ring to take it off and now it can't be used again Does this mean the shift boot won't have anywhere to hold on to on the top?

Yep, that is what it means. If you did not damage it too bad then any good welder can fix it. I think someone said there is one on the forum somewhere. If you did distroy it any good machinist can make one. Or find a heavy washer, Detroit diesel head bolt washers may be the correct thickness. You could also carefully, the key words being carefully use a multi-tool to grind the weld on the ring on your stock shifter and have that welded on your short shifter.

I didn't destroy it.. The guy who cut it off did... Wow this sucks. But I was wondering: theres clips sticking out from the bottom of my stock shift knob that are what hold onto the shift boot. Is it possible to put these into my tall type trd shift knob?

How are the clips attached? If they can go on your TRD knob I assume they could work. I looked and I don't have any clips on mine so I'm not sure

Yeah...you cut it off and weld a washer back onto the shaft. I believe it's a 1/2" washer that fits. You might have to do come shaving down of the place where the old ring sat...

I'll post a picture later of the one Ren welded for me. I just cut it off then figured the rest out...

Just take the shifter to the hardware store to find a washer that fits correctly.

Then have someone just tack weld it into place to secure the shift boot between (pinches between the knob and washer).

you could have just took off the plastic clips that hold the shift to the shift knob.

that ring on the shifter its self doesn't do anything but serve as a place for the regular ball type shift knob to sit flush on.

^What clips???

Even with no shift boot or anything the tall TRD knob will only tread on with about two threads...

I think he is talking about the clips inside the stock shift knob. The clips stick out from the bottom of the knob and go into the boot opening to hold the shift boot in place. I would take a picture but my car is at the shop..

I know what you're talking about...the ones on the 91 shifter. The TRD knob doesn't have those. It's like the ball knob...just a lot longer. The threads are really deap and can't reach because of the ring around the shifter...

Exactly. So since I already cut the ring on the trd shifter to fit the tall knob, is welding a washer the only way to get the shift boot to hold in place?

It's the best way. you could probably get away without welding it. I just wanted it secure...
