Another depressing MR2 moment/ need help

Update 11/3/09
My mechanic checked the car today and found that the release bearing is the problem. tell me if this is right or not? its always good to know different opinions.

thanks

So my MR2's clutch has been acting funny lately so i was planning to get it looked at today. Well on the way home from school, my clutch suddenly vibrates and i take it out of gear. then afterwards, my shifter wont go into gear as if there is a wall that is preventing it from going in. Now this only happens when the car is on, when its off, the shifter can go into gear. However when I try to start it, it wont move into any gear. I tried starting it in 1st gear and it still wont work, instead it prevents the car from starting

So due to the fact that I cant get my car moving, i cant take it to my mechanic so therefore he has to come over tomorrow to look at my car. What I think may be the problem is the clutch disk or the bearings. Im hoping its nothing serious like having to buy a new Tranny but this really gets me depressed. It kills me thinking that I wont be able to drive my MR2 tomorrow or maybe several days (knock on wood).

my mechanic is coming tomorrow but if any of you guys out there can help me out with my problem such as telling me what might be wrong or how to fix it, then that would help speeding up my fixing progress.

this is how ive been feeling all day with a load of depression

From those symtoms, it's just a very worn clutch is all. Those appear to be typical signs - so I wouldn't worry about your tranny going. But I also wouldn't be surprised if it gave you lots of warning to do something beforehand...

funny like when pressing the clutch down, it feels harder than usual and i could feel a vibration in the pedal. when that happens, the gears wont come out and I have to force them out.

I think toyota does sell just the throw out bearing. I remember reading that they are around $40. A new clutch is $150 or so and you have to split the engine and trans so you might want to think about doing that while your there. Just save some time and money down the road.

so your saying i should replace the clutch while im at it? tomorrow we are going to try and get my car to a lift so we can separate the transmission from the engine easier. all i want is my car to shift smoother and drive correctly

That's what I'm saying. Anytime you have it appart you should atleast check it to see how it looks. Since you are going to be there just save time and frustration by doing it now if it looks low. Just my opinion though. Another thing, I've heard (not sure if it's true or not) the throw out bearing only has a lifespan of being pushed out of 24 hours. If you just push the clutch in at a redlight with the car in gear you might want to rethink that. Everytime I stop I put it in neutral and let go of the clutch. I can't say it's true but I don't feel like dropping any more mr2 transmissions for a while.

Talk to aaron at lithia, I recently ordered a new clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing from him and it only cost me like $220 something shipped to my house.

Granted these were parts for a NA mk1 so your price may differ but I would speak with him if you can wait about 4-5 days for the part.

I had the same probs as you and when I took my trans out the springs on my clutch disc literally fell out of it.
