e-brake question / problem
Hello everyone,
I just bought my first 1991 MR2 and noticed the e-brake cable is either too loose or stretched out. I get about 3 "clicks" when engaging it and it doesn't hold the car in place. Is this an eay fix or is it best to have a pro do this work? Thanks a lot. Tim |

sounds like your ebrake cable snaped off.
its super easy to fix. the only thing is that you chill out around $50 or so for new cables. First: find out which side cable got busted. Have a friend pull the ebrake while you look under see which one is moving and which one is not. After that its pretty stright forward just jack the car up high so you can work under it. Remove the underbody panles, bam its all there. A couple of bolts from the panles and two or so for the brake cable, bam your done. Actually removing the panles takes the longest. that all there is to it. |

So I'm attempting to swap out my e-brake cables. In my attempts to discover my problem cable, I over tightened the nuts that regulates the cables, which is directly below the e-brake handle under the car. My problem now is that my brake calipers are frozen and my rear tires will bearly budge. I released my e-brake cable, not that it worked anyway, and loosened up the tention nut on those cables, but still the brake calipers are locked down. I think I'm over my head now since I'm not too educated in brakes and calipers.
What are my options? How can I release pressure on my brakes so I can at least drive it to the Toyota dealer? Thanks a lot for everyone's help. |

Here's an update: After I tightened the nut on the cable the brake calipers clinched the rotor, so does that mean the cables are good or are they just stretched out? Another question I have is, why don't the capilers release when I loosen the ebrake cable?
Thanks, sorry for my ignorance. |

Ok, new problem now with my parking brake cable replacement project. I received my new cables and just removed my old broken cables, except for where the end connects to the the rear brakes. There's a pin i need to knock out that is so stuck not even wd-40 and a hammer will budge them. Photo below. I cut the cable so I could swivel the piece around to hopefully loosen it up.
What are my options here to get that pin out? ![]() |

Oh I have tried that. Pliers, hammer, tried wedging a screwdriver in there to pry it out with no success. I can't believe it's so stuck.
What else can I do? |

I think I'll try some kind of clamp or vice to push it out next.

I assume you removed the retaining clip off of the pin?

Yes, the clip is off with no problems. I seriously spent about 4 hours last night with a can of WD-40, a hammer, pliers and a screw driver acting as a wedge. That pin just will not move.
You've heard about the "hose from hell"? This pin is the "Pin from hell" |

Forgot to update this, but that f'n pin would not come out, all it took was some super penetrating fluid. I'm in good shape now. Thanks for all your comments.

you can't really use those numbers, those are just PNC's off the epc which are only half the numbers so don't go to toyota giving them 5 digit codes cuz they'll have no idea what your asking for
