Rearended by a semi - twice!!!

I was in my MR2 on my way to the last OSU home game last night and I got hit by a semi at low speed (during rush hour stop and go traffic). It knocked me forward about 15 -20 ft (I had the clutch in and wasn't on the brakes). I was far enough in front of the truck to where he could easily see me out his windshield had he been paying attention, so I stopped the car right there and began to get out and approach him. As I had stepped one foot out of the car and began standing, he hit me again!!! Anyway, I got an estimate today... $5901.76. This SUCKS cuz that will definately total my car out, and I love my car. It is a '94 n/a 5speed in really good shape and I know I won't be able to find one as nice for what the insurance company will give me when they total it out. I am soooo bummed right now. I wanted a second gen MR2 since I was 15 (I'm now 28), and I FINALLY found a nice one and bought it and now its totalled!!! So I pose the question: "Now what?" I owe $$ on it, so I can probably buy it back and pay it off, but I won't have the money leftover to fix it and its still a salvaged title 15 yr old car that I can't get full coverage insurance on, so I am probably better off looking for a different one (which I won't find for NADA retail or whatever the insurance bastards will pay me). I could find someone to bid it REALLY low and fi it as I go. I could use the $$ to pay it off and the rest of the $$ as a down payment on a 370Z (or insert any other newish cool car, that's just the first one that comes to mind), but I don't really want a big payment. Open to suggestions. Thanks.

^ Agreed. You can fight for more insurance money, if you can give them a valid reason.

damn man. that sucks. i know i would be devistated if my 94 got totaled. i personally would buy it back cheap from the insurance company, use the rest of the cash for a new car, and slowly fix the 2 for your weekend driver. if however you do decide to part it or sell it, i call first dibs. lol

ACCIDENT

What a bummer! I don't care for OK drivers period. You may remember about the simi driver that caused the massive fatality awhile back around Miami OK resulting in several deaths.
You have to beware of truckers now. A Texan told me with the economy being bad many inexperienced are turning to driving trucks for a living. Which makes sense.
Consider another MR2, a difficult find, or a 350Z to save $$$.
Have lived in Tulsa / Ok for 24 long years.

Are there ever any meets or anything here in Tulsa? Also, funny you should mention a 350Z... I just sold a G35 coupe, but my dad wants to sell his 04 350Z... I've been thinking about it but insurance is a little high on those.

there have been, but its really tough to get people together. We all run different schedules.

Fight for the highest enthusiast price; NADA doesn't take rarity into account. You might buy a cheap car to run for a while as you search for another MR2... it took me about a year to find mine. Unless you think you're ready to move on to something newer with less age problems...

I actually sold a "nicer" car when I bought my 2 cuz I loved it so much. I had an '04 G35 coupe, but after I bought my 2, I didn't drive it nearly as much.

mmarookiejoe,

Sorry for your loss. I was in the process of selling my two when it was vandalized. They removed the doors, bent the fenders and front bumper, trashed the interior. I was asking $5200 for the car and the insurance company adjuster said it was worth $5201! Asked them what would happen to the car and they said it would be sold for salvage value $200. I said "Can you pay me $5001 and let me keep it?" they said "Sure." So now I'm in the process of restoring her. First time I'm ever tried something like this but I'm learning quite a bit with the help of this (and other) boards. Maybe you'll be able to get a similar deal and use yours as a donor if it's not repairable.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. The damage was pretty minimal: Ruined the spoiler, rear bump cover, and rear trunk lid; a VERY little damage to the adjacent quarter panel and i will have to realign the right tail light and reverse light panel. The insurance co is giving me a pretty good check, and I have already ordered a bunch of parts. Since there is no structural or mechanical damage, its and easy fix. I was planning on getting a tom's lower lip spoiler and a toms rear bumper anyway, so the accident actually financed my project!!! I ordered the Tom's spoilers (I will be selling the upper wing), tom's rear bumper, greddy sideskirts (my sides weren't damaged, I just might as well get everything painted and installed at once), and a used trunk lid from a member of this forum. I will still have over $2000 to have the minor damage fixed and get everything painted and installed. Oh, and they aren't totalling the car - (they basically paid me the most that they would pay without calling it a total loss) so no salvage title!!! It turned out that this accident was actually a good thing for me.
